Arteta gets what he ‘really wanted’ as details of new Jorginho contract emerge at Arsenal

The details of Jorginho’s new Arsenal contract after the midfielder’s extension was formally announced by the club.

Arsenal have officially confirmed that Jorginho has signed a new contract.

The midfield veteran has been an important player to Mikel Arteta this season.

The Gunners signed him from Chelsea in a deal worth £12 million in the 2023 January transfer window. In the second half of last season he produced some impressive performances, but he has become a more important figure at the Emirates Stadium over the course of the current campaign.

Partially due to the injury issues suffered by Thomas Partey, Jorginho has played more regularly for Arsenal this season than many would have expected. Across all competitions, the 32-year-old has racked up 35 appearances.

What Jorginho brings to Arsenal

Jorginho has also become something of a mentor to Declan Rice in the middle of the park, and has forged an impressive partnership with the former West Ham United man. With Jorginho sitting at the base of the midfield, Rice is freed up to take up a more advanced role.

Rice has excelled in the final third this season, enjoying his best season in front goal of his career to date. It is the composure and reliability of Jorginho, though, that has given Arteta the freedom to unleash Rice higher up the pitch.

As he is now in the twilight years of his career, Jorginho can no longer start matches week in, week out. However, his game was never reliant upon pace or physicality. Instead, he is an expert at reading the game, positioning himself well, and using his tactical understanding to ensure that his frailties aren’t exposed. Therefore, there should be no major concerns that he might be about to enter into a sudden decline.

Arteta has described Jorginho as the most intelligent player he has ever worked with and those qualities are obvious on the pitch.

Extending the 52-cap Italy international’s stay in North London was a wise move. Journalist Fabrizio Romano has now provided further details about the player’s new deal.

Reporting on X, he stated that Jorginho’s new contract will be valid until June 2025, the end of next season. There is no extension clause included in this deal, but Arteta and sporting director Edu are said to have gotten what they “both really wanted” out of the negotiations.

Arsenal will be planning to add to their midfield contingent this summer, but Jorginho will offer leadership, experience, and trustworthy depth next season.
