And so it ends for Newcastle United.
After such a demanding season, Eddie Howe has put Newcastle on the cusp of yet more European football.

Granted, entry into the continent’s third tier competition would surely not have been the target before a ball was kicked this season but context feels important.
Not only did the club lose big summer signing Sandro Tonali to a prolonged ban from football but Howe has also had to deal with an injury crisis that refused to relent, as well as some ridiculously difficult cup draws.
With all that in mind, it’s hardly surprising that they finished lower than last season.
Still, it doesn’t excuse some of the bad performances we’ve seen this season.
Mitigating factors should obviously be taken into account but they only go so far.
Indeed, the defending has left a lot to be desired all season.
Newcastle ended up allowing 62 Premier League goals past them. Only West Ham conceded more in the top half.
It was a far cry from last time out, where Howe’s side were level with Manchester City in having conceded the fewest goals (33).
Howe believes getting back to their best at the back is one of the major objectives for next season.

Speaking after the thrilling 4-2 win over Brentford on the final day, Howe admitted the “issues” to solve were mainly defensively.
“We have issues to solve defensively,” he told BBC Sport’s Match of the Day.
“If we can do that, next season could be another season of really strong performances.
“This was a season that could have been better, but a good season overall.
“We’re a real united club. I think we’re still moving forward, so there’s a lot to be positive about.”
Newcastle are already working to solve their biggest issues
The transfer window does not open until Friday June 14, 2024.
However, it seems the club aren’t wasting any time before then.
Tosin Adarabioyo and Lloyd Kelly of Fulham and Bournemouth respectively are reportedly keen to sign for Newcastle after holding talks with the club.
Though defending goes far beyond just what the back four do, that feels like positive progress.
