'Unbelievable player': Grealish lauds £30m Man City ace who didn't start v West Ham during title celebrations

Manchester City won the Premier League title on Sunday and during the celebrations, Jack Grealish branded one of his teammates ‘an unbelievable’ player.

Pep Guardiola‘s side made history with their win over West Ham United, as it meant a fourth straight title – a feat that has never been achieved in the Premier League before.

Star of the show Phil Foden scored twice and Rodri added a third in the second-half.

Mohammed Kudus scored a sublime goal for West Ham against the run of play. But by and large, it was a drama-free day for City. Arsenal beat Everton, but City were never really in a position of jeopardy.

It has been a fantastic effort from the players this season.

To go again after winning the Treble is really impressive, and after the game, Jack Grealish gave one of the more underrated players in the team his flowers…

After yesterday’s game, Grealish conducted an interview for Sky Sports.

He did not play against the Hammers, with Jeremy Doku preferred on the left wing. That selection also saw Mateo Kovacic drop to the bench.

Kovacic has become a very important player for City in recent weeks, and has struck up a particularly effective partnership with Rodri in the midfield.

Pep said ahead of kick-off yesterday that it was a tough call to leave him out against West Ham.

During the title celebrations on Sunday, Grealish spoke about Kovacic.

He said: “I am so proud. People like Kovacic, I swear man, he’s the best guy. He is an unbelievable player but what a guy.

“He has never won the Premier League. The last few weeks he has played every single minute of every game and today he don’t play, he just took it like a champion and he is so happy for the team.”

Grealish also commented on Kovacic’s post-match Instagram post, saying ‘Love you mate. What a boy’.

What a signing Kovacic has been

So Kovacic won his first Premier League title on Sunday, and the Croatia international can be so proud of his first term as a City player.

He signed for the club for around £30 million last summer from Chelsea – and what an addition to the squad he has turned out to be. Indeed, ex-City defender Nedum Onuoha called him ‘a great bit of business’ recently.

Kovacic has made 45 appearances for the club, scoring three goals and making one assist.

City lost a hugely influential player in Ilkay Gundogan, and that meant instant pressure on Kovacic when he arrived. He hasn’t really been a replacement for the German as such, but he’s certainly been a great signing.

We know Pep Guardiola loves for his side to control matches. And when Kovacic plays, he definitely brings that, especially when he’s in there with Rodri.
