‘If I was a manager’: Pat Bonner urges teams in Scotland to sign Celtic player who’s on ‘decent money’

Now that Celtic have won the Scottish Premiership title, as well as next weekend’s Scottish Cup final, the fans will be looking forward to a busy summer transfer window.

With millions of pounds heading Celtic’s way after booking an automatic Champions League group stage place, Brendan Rodgers will have a better chance of adding that much-needed quality he has been craving all season.

But as well as adding fresh faces to his squad, the Celtic manager will need to equalise that by moving on players who are clearly not part of his plans.

Stephen Welsh touted for Celtic exit

Pat Bonner believes Stephen Welsh is a player who clubs in Scotland should be looking at. The former Scotland u21 international is clearly a player who Brendan Rodgers likes after handing him a new deal this season.

But Bonner thinks teams in Scotland should look to sign him as he struggles to make any real impact on the Celtic first-team.

Bonner said [BBC Radio Scotland], “If I was a manager in another team in Scotland, I would be looking closely at Stephen [Welsh] to bring Stephen in if he’s not going to get a game here.

“I know he’s going to be on decent money but he’s a good type. That’s the key.

“And if he gets games week in, week out, I think he could perform for you.

“Especially if you’re playing with three at the back, where he could play on the right side of a three.”

Now, to be fair to Welsh, the 24-year-old has suffered from horrendous luck with injury. He missed the start of this season not long after signing his new deal as an ankle injury kept him out of the reckoning for 74 days. [Transfermarkt]

He has also had the form of Liam Scales to contend with as the Republic of Ireland defender has enjoyed an incredible season at Celtic.

And against St Mirren on Saturday, it looks like the shoulder injury Welsh sustained for the second time this season will keep him out of the Scottish Cup final this weekend.

On just over £8k per week [SalarySport], Welsh would be out of the range of many clubs in Scotland and if he were to move on, it would likely be a loan deal.

However, the Celtic defender has not been short of suitors. Last summer, Welsh was reportedly a target for Serie A sides Hellas Verona and Bologna appeared to show interest.

So it’s clear Welsh is highly thought of but he just doesn’t seem to have enough in him to claim a regular spot at Celtic so maybe a move away whether it be on-loan or permanent could be the best for him and his career.
