NEW YORK — Mayor Eric Adams called off a plan Wednesday to cut all city agency budgets by 5% this spring — but also announced he’s going to slash nearly $600 million in projected spending on housing and services for newly arrived migrants. Under a plan first rolled out by City Hall in fall 2023, all agencies were supposed to face 5% budget reductions in April — on top of two previous rounds of 5% cuts in November and January — in order to offset costs associated with caring for the migrants. But in a statement Wednesday afternoon, the mayor said he’s canceling the April cuts thanks to “better-...

Wendy Williams’ family has spoken out on the health issues the former talk show host has reportedly faced behind the scenes in recent years — including alcoholism and Graves’ disease. The former talk show host’s loved ones spoke to People ahead of the Feb. 24 premiere of the two-night Lifetime special “Where Is Wendy Williams?” The project, executive produced by Williams, 54, was filmed from summer 2022 until last spring. It was then that the New Jersey native entered a facility to address the “cognitive issues” linked to alcohol use, as her son Kevin Hunter Jr. notes in the film. “The people ...

You’ve swiped right, had the first dates and are now “together” with a person. Great! Or is it? A client recently reached out to me and said, “I’ve been seeing this guy for about a month from Hinge. I’ve met his family already, mine know about him. We’ve met each other’s friends. When is it OK to define the relationship? Do I just assume we’re together?” Meetups with each other’s family and friends are definitely significant milestones that veer into “exclusive” or “couple” territory. For other people, this may be spending an important holiday together, exchanging thoughtful gifts or taking a ...

Patty Hearst turned 70 on Tuesday. That might not mean a great deal to some of you. But to a generation very much alive, that name should bring back some vivid memories, some images of a rifle-toting young woman who was at the center of one of the most colorful, extensively reported crimes of the last or any century. What’s she been up to? Well, she is now known as Patricia Hearst Shaw and for many years has been in the news mostly for her dogs. A couple of her French bulldogs (Tuggy and Rubi) won prizes, including some at the prestigious and televised Westminster Kennel Club dog show. What wa...

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The nation’s first hate crime trial for a gender-based murder began Tuesday in Columbia. Dime Doe, a transgender woman, was found dead in her car off a country road in Allendale, South Carolina, around 6 p.m. on Aug. 4, 2019. She had been shot three times in the head from close range. Just hours earlier, Doe had been stopped for speeding. In drizzling rain, an Allendale sheriff’s deputy who knew Doe recorded himself on body camera giving Doe a speeding ticket. She texted her mom, “I’m alright. Just a $72 ticket.” It was the last time anyone heard from her. Sitting in the recli...

Cardinal Dolan has denounced the recent funeral for trans icon Cecilia Gentili that was held at St. Pat’s. More than 1,000 people attended the ceremony at the historic Manhattan cathedral on Thursday — a crowd Dolan described as disrespectful. “Once the funeral started is when the trouble started because of the irreverence and the disrespect of the big crowd that was there,” he said Tuesday on SiriusXM’s The Catholic Channel, addressing the funeral for the first time. “That was very, very sad.” The parish had received a call from Gentili’s loved ones requesting the funeral be held at the famed...

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State was looking forward to the opportunity of righting the wrongs of an epic collapse at Iowa last season. And for a moment, it looked like Michigan State might get its revenge as it mounted a furious second-half rally. But Iowa always had an answer for the Spartans and ultimately delivered a 78-71 loss. Pryce Sandfort led the Hawkeyes with 22 points and Ben Krikke added 18 points and 14 rebounds to help Iowa snap Michigan State’s three-game win streak. Meanwhile, Malik Hall recorded his third double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Tyson Wa...

A letter from Abraham Lincoln, after decades of being locked up inside a private collector’s desk, has resurfaced. According to WHYY, a letter signed by the late president “in the final hours of his life” is now being offered for $45,000 by Raab Collection. The Ardmore-based company which researches, buys, and sells documents of historical figures, purchased the letter from an anonymous owner. Collection president Nathan Raab told The Inquirer that he received a call from a woman who found the document after going through her late husband’s writing desk. There was initially “great interest tem...

Vladimir Putin killed him. The Russian leader is as responsible for Friday’s death of Alexei Navalny — that country’s most fearless and famous opposition leader — as if he personally had shot him. Navalny, who had rallied anti-Kremlin crowds across Russia before being jailed on bogus charges in 2021, died in a grim Arctic penal colony where he was serving a 19-year sentence. He was the latest in a long string of prominent Russian activists and journalists jailed, shot, or poisoned under Putin (Navalny barely survived a poisoning attempt in 2020). Yet Navalny was unique. His bravery and his cha...

COLUMBIA, S.C. — If former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is going to win, or at least beat expectations against former President Donald Trump in the Feb. 24 First in the South presidential primary, she’ll need independents to show up and possibly Democratic voters to cross over. And with less than a week to go before the South Carolina GOP primary, groups are stepping up efforts to turnout non-Republicans to the state’s open primary that allows anyone who didn’t vote in the Democratic contest to vote in the Republican nominating contest. Only 131,000 participated in South Carolina’s First in...
