Previously unknown colonies of emperor penguins have been spotted in new satellite imagery. Emperor penguins, considered 'near threatened' with extinction, are the world’s largest penguins. They raise their chicks in Antarctic winter on patches of frozen sea ice. But if the ice breaks up before the chicks have fledged, most will die. At least some emperor penguins are moving their colonies as melting ice from climate change threatens breeding grounds, according to research released on Wednesday. Emperor penguin breeding sites are 'in flux'One penguin colony near Halley Bay appears to have move...

British scientists said Thursday that they discovered avian influenza, or bird flu, in mammals near Antarctica for the first time. The pathogen was detected in elephant seals and fur seals, the UK government's Animal Plant Health Agency (APHA) in London announced. The virus was also detected in Dominican gulls and Antarctic terns. It had tested animals on the island of South Georgia, which lies in the southern Atlantic on the same latitude as Tierra del Fuego, for the H5N1 virus after several brown skua (Stercorarius antarcticus) were found dead there in October. The virus was likely introduce...

Washington (AFP) - The sea ice around Antarctica likely had a record low surface area when it was at its maximum size this winter, a preliminary US analysis of satellite data showed Monday. As the southern hemisphere transitions into spring, the US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) said in a statement that Antarctic sea ice had only reached a maximum size of 16.96 million square kilometers (6.55 million square miles) this year, on September 10. The ice pack typically reaches its largest size during the colder winter months, so the September 10 reading will likely remain this year's max...

Paris (AFP) - The runaway collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet -- which would trigger catastrophic sea level rise -- is not "inevitable", scientists said Monday following research that tracked the region's recent response to climate change. As global temperatures rise, there is mounting concern that warming could trigger so-called tipping points that set off irreversible melting of the world's massive ice sheets and ultimately lift oceans enough to drastically redraw the world map. New research published Monday suggests a complex interaction of factors affecting the melting of the West Ant...
