Heineken, the world's second-largest brewer, has beaten expectations with the news that it sold 4.7% more beer in terms of volume during the first three months of 2024, compared with the same quarter in 2023. The rise, announced on Wednesday, surpasses analysts' expectations of 2.5% and follows a period of subdued demand. Russia's Baltika Breweries is taking four Carlsberg subsidiaries to court claiming damages to the value of 6.24 billon Danish Krone (€837 million), according to Reuters. Details were revealed in court filings in St Petersburg which cited Carlsberg Sverige, Carlsberg Deutschland, Carlsberg Breweries and Russian subsidiary Hoppy Union as defendants, the news agency said. German beer consumption is continuing its downward path, the Federal Statistical Office reported on Thursday as it released turnover figures for 2023. German breweries sold 8.4 billion litres over the course of the year, 4.5% down on the 2022 figure. That year saw a slight rise, but the trend has been downwards since the 1990s as a result of demographic trends and the shift to alcohol-free beverages.
