Stellantis NV CEO Carlos Tavares on Tuesday said there could be only five major global automakers left standing following the electrification transition — with Stellantis among them — though the company isn't pursuing new significant collaborations or mergers at this point. "We're not," Tavares said during a roundtable with reporters in New York about having such discussions amid pressure to tie-up with competitors in the face of Chinese competition in Europe. "Right now, we are just focused on execution. We have enough on our plate. There are no discussions on consolidation right now. ... I w...

Automotive suppliers are embracing flexibility as automakers downshift their electric-vehicle plans and reemphasize hybrids in response to the slower-than-expected uptake of zero-tailpipe emission vehicles. It’s a delicate balance. Suppliers say they know they’ll have to invest for EVs eventually, but they also know they can’t tie up too much of their capital and risk overcapacity. Likewise, they need workers with the skills for a new set of technology; they also need the workforce to produce the gas- and diesel-powered vehicles making them money now. Automakers in recent months have announced...

Romance is dead. The idea of refined, beautiful things is a notion that’s been replaced by a post-industrial aesthetic that has utterly ruined product design. It’s as if every design is meant to challenge our notion of beauty rather than endorse it. It’s as if corporate America wants us to accept items we once threw away as something beautiful or useful. All new design is devised to shock or abuse our sense of beauty. It’s no wonder that Ral...

General Motors Co. will deliver profit-sharing payouts of up to $12,250 this year to about 45,000 eligible hourly workers, according to the company's financial results released Tuesday. Last year, GM paid 42,300 eligible hourly workers up to $12,750 — its largest payout ever after the United Auto Workers negotiated removing the previous $12,000 cap on profit sharing during the 2019 contract talks with the Detroit automaker. Employees typically receive the payouts at the end of February. In a Tuesday letter to GM members, UAW Vice President Mike Booth, who is director of the GM department, told...

GM's results, which beat expectations, included revenue for the year of $171.8 billion, up from the $156.7 billion the Detroit automaker collected in 2022. In the fourth quarter, GM made $2 billion in net income on revenue of $42.98 billion. In the fourth quar...
