DrugTrafficking
A bleak picture has emerged from a report published Friday by the EU crime agency. Europol has identified 821 particularly threatening criminal networks with more than 25,000 members across the bloc. According to the agency, 86% of those networks can infiltrate the legal economy to hide their activities and launder their criminal profits. Europol cited the example of a gang leader identified as an Italian businessman of Argentinian origin residing in Marbella, Spain. The individual specialises in drug trafficking and money laundering and manages several companies, including one that imports ba...

More people in Belgium are arriving at clinics with serious lesions in their noses amid rising cocaine consumption, doctors say. The ear nose and throat (ENT) clinic of Liège's University Hospital Centre (CHU) often sees patients with nasal obstruction. Cocaine can cause blood vessels to narrow in the nose which can damage tissue. This can lead to perforations in the mucose membrane and the cartilage. “There is damage to both the mucus membrane and cartilage so to the nasal septum, which is affected, as well as the internal structures,” said Dr Sophie Tombu, a doctor at the ENT clinic at Liège...

At the United Nations climate conference in Dubai last year, I called the climate crisis, “the Crisis of Life,” and joined island states in calling for an equitable phase-out of coal, oil, and gas. While the nations of the world finally agreed to “transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems”, many governments and corporations continue to ignore the scientific imperative. The stark reality remains: the only way to avoid the worst of the climate emergency is to stop the production of new fossil fuels and negotiate a fair process to quit their use, in line with scientific recommendations....

“It was a night of horror,” explained Laetitia Linon, staring at her nephew’s grave in Marseille’s largest cemetery. The 14-year-old was killed outside a housing estate in the city's impoverished 'Quartiers Nord'. He was shot five times with a Kalashnikov. “A little boy can die here under a hail of bullets, like in Mexico, a cartel country,“ Linon added. Some parents are resorting to unusual means in a bid to protect their children. “They bring charges against their own children to keep them safe from drug networks,” law student Amine Kessaci, founder of the NGO 'Conscience', told Euronews. ”W...

Spanish police have seized eight tonnes of cocaine hidden in a fake power generator at the southern port of Algeciras. According to the Minsitry of Finance, the shipping container containing the drugs had been transported from Suriname to Panama and then onwards to Algeciras, a route carefully chosen to avoid detection. TRhe was expected to continue its route onwards to Leixoes, a port on the north-western coast of Portugal, before being transported by road into Spain. The cocaine haul is one of the largest intercepted in Spain in recent years. The fake generator in which the drug was stashed ...

After seeing an upsurge in homicide rates over the past decade, with most of them linked to drug trafficking, Costa Rica is now asking the European Union for help fighting narco activity in the country. According to the latest official figures, murders have increased by 66% between 2013 and 2023, with more than 70% of them being related to drug trafficking, forcing the once-peaceful nation to increase police presence in its streets. But the government’s efforts have done little to rein in the activity of international drug traffickers in the country, which has turned Costa Rica into a major hu...

The Ecuadorian government has begun the process of destroying some 22 tonnes of cocaine seized at the beginning of the week, the largest seizure ever made in the country. The seizure comes at a time of extreme violence for the country, whose government is engaged in a de facto war against organised crime. In footage attained from the operation, a truck can be seen surrounded by a large contingent of soldiers armed with weapons and a group of people wearing protective suits, goggles and masks unloading the packages. Authorities used a technique known as encapsulation to destroy the drug, pulver...
