As Malia Obama makes strides in her Hollywood career, she’s decided to take on a new name. The writer and producer, who is also the eldest daughter of Barack and Michelle Obama, will now go by her middle name: Malia Ann, perhaps in an effort to distance herself from her powerful parents’ fame. The change was revealed in the Sundance Institute’s “Meet the Artist” spotlight video, which introduced her as a filmmaker. She described her film project “The Heart” as “an odd little story, somewhat of a fable, about a man grieving the death of his mother after she leaves him an unusual request in her ...

NEW YORK — Brooklyn-born actor Tony Ganios, known for roles in cult movies such as “Porky’s” and “The Wanderers,” had died at the age of 64. The actor’s fiancee, Amanda Serrano, confirmed Tuesday that Ganios died unexpectedly on Feb. 18 after falling ill days before. In a social media post, Serrano explained that Ganios “hadn’t felt well” and “hid it” from her for several days. But on Saturday, he was taken to a hospital in New York, where he underwent emergency surgery after doctors discovered he had a “severely infected” spinal cord. While the operation itself was successful, the ’80s film s...

It’s fascinating that Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke, longtime filmmaking collaborators and spouses, and the creative team behind the queer exploitation flick “Drive-Away Dolls,” have repeatedly — and lovingly — described their new film as “trashy” in interviews. It’s a way of nodding to influences like the “Pope of Trash” himself, John Waters, and titillating B-movie king Russ Meyer. Or perhaps it’s a way to get ahead of, and away from, certain expectations tied to Coen and his former filmmaking partner, his brother Joel. This ain’t your daddy’s “No Country for Old Men,” after all. “Drive-Away D...

The Beatles are getting the film treatment as Oscar winner Sam Mendes gears up to helm four films from each of the Fab Four’s perspectives — for which there will be “nothing off limits.” The Academy Award-winning director of “American Beauty” told Deadline that he went to Hollywood late last year to pitch the films about John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. The projects, which are set to rock theaters in 2027, mark the first time the group’s full life story and music rights have been granted for a scripted film by the surviving Beatles and families of Lennon and Harris...

Beyoncé has hit a new high with her new country song “Texas Hold ‘Em.” Although much hay has been made about the single, it debuted in the No. 1 position on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart — which tallies streaming, airplay and sales. According to Rolling Stone, the former Destiny’s Child frontwoman holds the distinction as “the first Black woman artist ever to top [the chart] in the modern history of country music.” “16 Carriages,” which also dropped after the premiere of Beyoncé’s Verizon commercial during Super Bowl LVIII — entered the ranking at No. 9. As buzz builds for the March 29 r...

A digital version of Lady Gaga is set to appear in wildly popular online shooter Fornite. The star teased her participation in an upcoming Fortnite Festival on Tuesday by tweeting a playful correction to her previous misspelling of the smash-hit game and including a glam Fortnite-style likeness of herself. She quote-tweeted her own 2019 tweet asking, “what’s fortnight”? The one-word text of the new tweet consisted of just the video game’s title spelled correctly, with an asterisk to indicate the “Shallow” singer knew she was making a correction. Fortnite Festival was introduced last year as th...

There’s a moment late in Denis Villeneuve’s sweeping sci-fi epic “Dune: Part Two,” when the camera lingers on a hand emerging out of desert sand, forming into a fist. It’s a small but apt visual metaphor for this sequel’s story, written by Villeneuve and Jon Spaihts, which takes all of the foundational exposition carefully laid in “Dune: Part One,” and kicks the plot of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel into spice-powered motion. In “Dune: Part Two,” power, and violence, rise from the desert sand of the planet Arrakis, where young Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) has found his true path among the de...

Q. We have a 2013 65-inch Panasonic plasma TV that we still love. It is so relaxing to watch. We are interested in another 65-inch TV, but do not like the unpleasant brightness and glare of the new TVs. Do you have any recommendations that would make us as happy as our plasma? —D.S., Martinez, California A. No matter the television, most if not all of this unpleasant brightness and glare is caused by the picture settings. Out of the box most TVs are set to what is often called “torch mode” because of the overpoweringly bright, blue picture that is meant to stand out in a showroom. In the store...
