CHICAGO — The Punisher turns 50 this month. Normally, when anybody turns 50, you want to congratulate them. But the Punisher outlived his welcome somewhere during the Reagan administration. He is an artifact of a time when Americans could still agree broadly on what was right or wrong, moral or criminal. He should have died decades ago, and yet there he is, every day, glowering. Probably, you don’t know you’re looking at him. He’s cultural white noise to many and a cultural dog whistle to others. He stares at you from T-shirts and tattoos and, most noticeably, those little stickers on the back...

CHICAGO -- When Lincoln University administrator Antoinette “Bonnie” Candia-Bailey took her own life last month, the news broke the internet, a family friend said in a eulogy during homegoing services in Joliet, Illinois. People had a lot to say about the death of the 49-year-old Chicago native who was the Missouri school’s vice president of student affairs: She was a conduit, a convenor and, most passionately, an advocate, said her friends, family and colleagues. The abundance of national headlines, social media posts, essays, tributes and video conferences that ensued created a torrent of em...

The canine standard of care bill that drew the ire of animal activists and the support of retail pet stores and breeders is headed back to the Indiana House for reconciliation after it was approved Monday in the Senate by a 31-18 margin. Eight Republicans joined their Democratic colleagues in opposing the measure, including Sen. Dan Dernulc, R-Highland, after a weekend of legislative updates in their districts. Dernulc had previously voted to approve the bill. If the measure becomes law, it will void 21 local ordinances prohibiting the sale of puppies in retail stores, including measures in Cr...

As recently as a decade or so ago, it was the norm for people to kennel their pets or, ideally, find a pet sitter when they went away on vacation. Nowadays, I see Instagram reels of adventuresome cats hiking the back country with their owners unabashedly. Meanwhile, hotels are increasingly adopting a “pets welcome” policy, so no one looks at me funny when I say I want to bring my dogs along on a trip. While my animal cohorts and I might stick to the car simply for the sake of ease, plenty of people are flying with their furry friends, or bringing them aboard trains and, less commonly, boats. A...

CHICAGO — When Susan Jicha greets guests at her Uptown neighborhood home, her pets like to make introductions. Her dog, Rosie, shakes her tail at the door and her bird, Kahlo, wobbles from underneath the television stand to perch on her hand. Kahlo is happy and independent, the 68-year-old retired teacher said. Her assertion that he’s the most photographed bird on the North Side rings true as he stretches his neck as if he were posing. By all accounts, he’s “living the good life.” But Kahlo’s life wasn’t always so easy. He’s not the type of bird many people would probably think of as a pet. He...

CHICAGO -- When Cristina Moreno enrolled her daughter, Camila, in kindergarten last year at St. Frances of Rome in Cicero, Illinois, she felt certain the school would provide a well-rounded education and social environment for years to come. Moreno, a single mother of two from Cicero, sends Camila to St. Frances with support from the Invest in Kids tax credit scholarship program, which she called a “great help” financially. In the fall, the expiration of the state's Invest in Kids program left Moreno scrambling to search for other scholarships and financial aid options to ensure that Camila, 7...

CHICAGO -- After walking the grounds of the Morton Arboretum for hours on a December morning, John Leonard and fellow birders were preparing to go to lunch when they encountered a rare sight: a flock of 17 red crossbills flying overhead and landing on some pine trees. “We said, ‘What the heck! You got to be kidding!'” he recalled. The retired neuroscience professor has been an active birder since he was 12 and has participated for almost four decades in the arboretum’s annual Christmastime bird count. “It’s always kind of like a treasure hunt.” Leonard said red crossbills are known for their i...

BARTLETT, Ill. -- Continuing care retirement communities offer seniors their own home, meals and activities, and assisted living or nursing if they need it. They can accommodate residents who range from being independent to those who require 24-hour care. Also known as life plan or life care communities, they require a hefty entrance fee, often ranging from $250,000 to $400,000 or more, plus significant monthly payments. When a resident leaves or dies and their unit is resold, depending on the contract, that fee may be repaid to the family at up to 90%. So when residents of The Oaks at Bartlet...

CHICAGO -- In high school, Jordan Parker wrote a paper on plastic pollution titled: “Is our country doomed to be buried beneath its own garbage?” Decades later, that question continues to galvanize Parker, who uses the pronoun them. In 2017 Parker founded the Triveni Institute, an environmental nonprofit that recently hosted a fashion show in which local designers created looks and outfits exclusively using single-use plastic, thrifted clothes and “found objects.” “The intention of these designs is to create beautiful art out of plastic pollution and help people lean into this issue in a way t...

MIAMI — More than 100 people have fallen ill with stomach problems on a monthslong world cruise that recently stopped in Fort Lauderdale. At least 123 passengers and 16 staff members have reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness, including diarrhea and vomiting, while on board the Queen Victoria ship, operated by Cunard Cruise Line, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The UK cruise line has been owned since 1998 by Doral-based Carnival Corp. The cruise, which initially departed from Southampton, England, in early January, is on a 107-night sailing journey. Th...
