Migration is one of the most controversial political subjects but a project to collect the sounds of this phenomenon will try to re-shape the debate around this issue. Migration Sounds has called for people to send sounds which represent moving away from their country to start a new life in a foreign country. These sounds will then be given to musicians and composers to make a piece of work which be used in the project. The idea is the brainchild of Cities and Memory and COMPAS, the Centre on Migration Policy and Society of the University of Oxford, in Britain Stuart Fowkes, sound artist and c...

Our correspondent Julián López travelled to the heart of the affected area to hear people’s different points of view. Finnish authorities accuse Russia of channelling illegal migrants to the border and assisting them with money, food, accommodation, or transportation in what they call a "hybrid attack" against Finland. Immigration detention centres in the United Kingdom still have a long way to go. That's according to a new report by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) released on Thursday. During a visit to the country between March and April 2023, it flagged up several issues surrounding the uncertainty of how long migrants will be detained, "prison-like" conditions in centres and the treatment of those displaying symptoms of mental illness. The UK government blasted the report, saying it did not "recognise much" of its content. The CPT report put forward a set of recommendations for...

Tensions are mounting between the Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams (D) and the governors of Texas and Arizona. After over 3000 new asylum seekers entered New York City’s service shelters in the span of six weeks, Adams pointed to Gov. Greg Abbot’s (R-Texas) previous statements of bussing migrants to D.C. and other liberal cities. With the increase in the population of homeless shelters, Adams called on the federal government for assistance. More food, clothing and blankets will be needed in order to maintain the current capacity, he said. “In order to both meet the legal mandate as a right-...
