Iowa Judge Joseph Seidlin temporarily blocked the state’s new ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. This means that abortion will once again be legal in Iowa up to 20 weeks of pregnancy while the court assesses the law’s constitutionality. Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-Iowa) signed the legislation just days ago, attempting to prohibit all abortions once cardiac activity can become detected; most women are not even aware that they are pregnant at the six-week threshold. Republican state lawmakers approved the measure last week, and Seidlin held a hearing on the matter on Friday after pro-choice...

Members of the Iowa Democratic Party were the targets of a racist attack over a Zoom meeting last Friday. State Rep. Phyllis Thede and Black Caucus Chair Al Womble gave their accounts of the incident to MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell. Thede was giving a speech when a picture of a monkey popped up on the screen. She says that she didn’t think much of it at first. “But as it went on, the young person started to say things about what the monkey looked like… and I’m sorry to be so forward, but talked about how big the testicles were,” Thede said. “Then they started to laugh and scream.” Womble said he...

As the party committees get to work on the 2024 presidential nomination process, Iowa might be losing its title of the first in the nation. The Iowa caucus’s reputation suffered badly in 2020, especially with the Democrats, due to the lack of racial diversity and the chaos in the vote count last year. “We have to be honest with ourselves, and Iowa is not representative of America,” former Democratic National Committee chair Tom Perez said Friday in an interview. “We need a primary process that is reflective of today’s demographics in the Democratic Party.” Amid the speculation that Iowa will s...

Iowa resident Nicole Marie Poole Franklin, who ran over a girl in 2019 because she “was a Mexican,” has pleaded guilty to federal hate crime charges in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa. Poole Franklin was involved in three separate racist incidents in December 2019, according to police reports. One incident involved Poole Franklin intentionally running over the leg of a 12-year-old African American boy, who was walking near a Des Moines apartment parking lot, and fleeing shortly afterward, resulting in minor injuries. Poole Franklin apparently “gunned [the] engine” of ...

Republican-controlled state legislature of Iowa approved a bill with a host of new voting restrictions, and Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) signed the bill into law on Tuesday. The new Iowa law shortens the state’s early voting period from 29 days to 20. Ballots received after an election’s calendar day will be invalidated, changing the current statute that mail ballots postmarked on election day valid. The legislature’s action means that even if a voter submits their ballot on time, postal delays could invalidate their vote. Voting sites will be required to close at 8 p.m. instead of 9 p.m., and electi...

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) has lifted mask and social distancing mandates in her state. Reynolds did not consult with public health officials before making this decision. Her decision may come as a surprise to some, given that Iowa is still seeing a positivity rate of 26.41%, the highest in the nation, as well as a slow vaccine rollout – only around 7.5% of the population has been vaccinated so far. In addition, the White House COVID Response Team said on Monday that, due to more contagious, and possibly more deadly, COVID variants, states should not ease up on restrictions. When speaking abou...

Just last week, Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) battled it out against her Democratic opponent, Theresa Greenfield, at a televised debate. Iowa voters greatly value a candidate who is familiar with local agricultural concerns, and the debate moderator took the opportunity to test the knowledge of the candidates.Greenfield was asked about the break-even price of corn, correctly providing an answer of $3.68 per bushel. When the attention turned to the incumbent, moderators wanted to know the price of soybeans, a question that seemed to shake Ernst. She first delivered a long response about trade policy...
