Washington (AFP) - Palestinians "need the bombs to stop," Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said Sunday as he made an impassioned plea for a ceasefire in Gaza, speaking during a St Patrick's Day reception at the White House. US President Joe Biden has been hosting Varadkar in Washington for an annual visit celebrating the close ties between the United States and Ireland, as 10 percent of Americans claim ancestral roots there. "The people of Gaza desperately need food, medicine and shelter, and most especially they need the bombs to stop," Varadkar said as Biden, who has come under pressure bo...

Washington (AFP) - President Joe Biden praised Friday a speech by the US Senate leader urging new elections in Israel, saying many Americans shared concerns about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's handling of the Gaza war. The call by Democratic Senate majority chief Chuck Schumer, the highest-ranking elected Jewish American in history, was the most strident rebuke of Israel yet by a senior US official since Hamas's October 7 attacks. "He made a good speech, and I think he expressed serious concern shared not only by him, but by many Americans," Biden said when asked about the speech after a...

Washington (AFP) - The Irish premier's annual Saint Patrick's Day visit to the White House is normally a joyful affair -- but this year the war in Gaza cast a shadow darker than a rainy Dublin sky. Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar and President Joe Biden -- who loves to celebrate his Irish ancestry -- found themselves having to paper over a deep split over Israel's handling of the conflict. Varadkar has been one of Europe's most critical leaders over the situation in Gaza, calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire. Biden meanwhile continues to send key US ally Israel weapons, while pu...

Brussels (AFP) - The European Court of Justice's top legal advisor recommended on Thursday that an EU court make a new ruling in the long-running 13-billion-euro ($14-billion) tax case between Apple and Brussels. The landmark case is one of the most fierce battles between the European Commission and big tech, dating back to 2016 when the EU's executive arm accused Ireland of allowing Apple to escape 13 billion euros in taxes. The EU claimed that, between 2003 and 2014, Apple parked untaxed revenue earned in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and India in Ireland, which is the European hub for bi...

London (AFP) - A newly released cache of FBI files has revealed a potential plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II during her 1983 visit to California. The possible threat followed a phone call made by "a man who claimed that his daughter had been killed in Northern Ireland by a rubber bullet", according to the document that also refers to a bar frequented by Irish Republican Army (IRA) sympathisers. The queen and her husband Prince Philip visited the west coast of the United States in February and March 1983, and the trip passed off without incident. Four years earlier in 1979, IRA paramilita...

Dublin (AFP) - Facebook owner Meta has been fined a record 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion) for transferring EU user data to the United States in breach of a previous court ruling, Ireland's regulator announced on Monday. The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), which acts on behalf of the European Union, said the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) had ordered it to collect "an administrative fine in the amount of 1.2 billion euros". The DPC has been investigating Meta Ireland's transfer of personal data from the EU to the United States since 2020. It found that Meta, which has its Europ...

New York (AFP) - Boeing's CEO is "confident" the company will fulfil Ryanair's giant 737 MAX-10 order announced Tuesday despite lingering supply chain and regulatory questions, a view shared by the Irish carrier. The two companies unveiled a massive agreement of 150 new planes, plus options of 150 more to be delivered between 2027 and 2033 in a deal worth more than $40 billion at list prices, which are customarily rebated for large orders. In a joint interview with AFP, the leaders of the two companies described the financial terms as "win-win" following a complex negotiation. When Boeing pre...

Paris (AFP) - It's been a rite of passage for American leaders since John F. Kennedy, one which many describe as a highlight of their time in the Oval Office. After a whistlestop visit to Northern Ireland on Wednesday, Joe Biden travels south to the Irish Republic, where the proud great-great-grandson of Irish emigrants can look forward to a rockstar reception. He will be the eighth US president to visit Ireland, where over 30 million Americans have roots. AFP looks back at the other visits: Crazy for KennedyIn the 1960s while Britain was in the throes of Beatlemania, Ireland was crazy for Ken...

Washington (AFP) - US President Joe Biden took off from Washington on Tuesday for a trip to Northern Ireland and Ireland, where he will mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday peace deal -- and celebrate his family roots. Air Force One departed Joint Base Andrews for Belfast, where Biden will be greeted by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Before boarding the plane, Biden told reporters that the main priority of his trip was to make sure the "Irish accords and the Windsor agreement stay in place." The 1998 Good Friday Agreement forged a political power sharing deal between the pro-indep...

Ballina (Ireland) (AFP) - The picturesque town of Ballina on the banks of the River Moy in northwest Ireland hums with activity ahead of a visit by its celebrated descendant Joe Biden this week. The US president is due to arrive in the north County Mayo town Friday to address thousands in the place from which his family hailed before emigrating to Pennsylvania in the 19th century. It will be one of the last stops on a tour of Ireland and Northern Ireland taking in Belfast, Dublin and other locations from the proudly Irish-American president's family history. Biden's relatives still remain in t...
