Year-on-year residential property prices in Ireland have continued to accelerate, according to the country's Central Statistics Office (CSO). The national Residential Property Price Index (RPPI) recorded an annual rise of 6.1% in the 12 months leading up to February 2024. Prices in Dublin climbed by 5.6%, while areas outside the capital saw an even higher rise of 6.5%. Last month, the Economic and Social Research Institute warned the Oireachtas Committee on Budgetary Oversight that Ireland's property prices were likely to continue rising in the near future, because of both low investment and a...

Swedish furniture giant IKEA is expanding its operations in Ireland by opening a new distribution centre today, based in Rathcoole, county Dublin. The site, which is capable of housing up to 9,000 different product lines, is over 27,000 square metres - twice the size of Ireland’s Croke Park stadium. Previously, IKEA customers in Ireland relied on dispatches from the UK, although the firm says the new centre will reduce delivery times to just three days. "This strategic move not only brings IKEA products closer to its Irish customers but also significantly improves product availability througho...

Cosgrave took a step back from Web Summit operations for six months after resigning as its chief executive following comments he made on the Israel-Hamas conflict. "When I stepped back last year, it was the first time I had taken time off in 15 years. It gave me time to think about Web Summit, its history, why I started it on my own from my bedroom and what I wanted it to be," he said on LinkedIn and Twitter. "I took the time to reconnect with old Web Summit friends and I listened to what they had to say and what they wanted from Web Summit. Some incredible tech advancements, relationships, pa...

A new report has estimated that the reunification of Ireland would cost around €20 billion a year for two decades. Findings from the Dublin-based Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA) take into account the current level of funding Northern Ireland receives from the UK government. They also include the share of UK national debt it would presumably carry were it to join a united Ireland as well as its economy's markedly low productivity relative to the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland's public services currently rely heavily on a "subvention" of some €11 billion from the UK...

The housing shortage in Ireland means that up to 58,000 new units are going to be needed in Ireland each year between now and 2027, according to estate agents Knight Frank and reported by RTE and the Irish Times. The number rises even further, to almost 62,000, when taking into account another 4,000 spaces needed for students, said the group. Of the 58,000 annual total, the report says, 32,000 properties should be for first time buyers or families while some 10,000 homes will be needed annually for those aged 75 and over. The report says 9,000 homes should be created for those in the 65 to 75 ...

Last weekend in Dublin, a distressing scene unfolded as numerous asylum seekers were obliged to sleep outside the government's International Protection Office in tents. They had no access to basic necessities – no electricity, no running water, no sanitation. The result could be described as a localised humanitarian disaster. According to Jed, an asylum seeker from Jordan, the recent conditions were deplorable. He described a lack of essential services, including toilets and showers, leaving people without proper hygiene facilities for weeks, enduring harsh weather conditions. Yet as we conduc...

Washington (AFP) - Palestinians "need the bombs to stop," Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said Sunday as he made an impassioned plea for a ceasefire in Gaza, speaking during a St Patrick's Day reception at the White House. US President Joe Biden has been hosting Varadkar in Washington for an annual visit celebrating the close ties between the United States and Ireland, as 10 percent of Americans claim ancestral roots there. "The people of Gaza desperately need food, medicine and shelter, and most especially they need the bombs to stop," Varadkar said as Biden, who has come under pressure bo...

Washington (AFP) - President Joe Biden praised Friday a speech by the US Senate leader urging new elections in Israel, saying many Americans shared concerns about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's handling of the Gaza war. The call by Democratic Senate majority chief Chuck Schumer, the highest-ranking elected Jewish American in history, was the most strident rebuke of Israel yet by a senior US official since Hamas's October 7 attacks. "He made a good speech, and I think he expressed serious concern shared not only by him, but by many Americans," Biden said when asked about the speech after a...
