Britain’s Home Secretary James Cleverly has said the government is doing all it can to stop dangerous small boat crossings, after news that five migrants had died in an attempt to cross the English Channel. Cleverly is in Rome to discuss ways to accelerate joint work to stem illegal migration from North Africa. His visit comes a day after the UK parliament passed the controversial Safety of Rwanda Bill, which will see some illegal migrants in the UK sent to the central African country. “This vital legislation means we can now proceed with our Rwanda plan and begin removing people with no right...

Italy’s Senate has passed legislation which allows regions to permit groups “with a qualified experience supporting motherhood” to have access to women considering abortions at public clinics. For the right-wing government, the amendment fulfils the original intent of the 1978 law legalising abortion, known as Law 194, which includes provisions to prevent the procedure and support motherhood. But some in the medical profession have questioned the wisdom of allowing medically unqualified, anti-abortion groups access to women considering the procedure. “Then you don't understand how you want to ...

The Italian city of Milan is proposing a new law to ban ice cream after midnight, in an effort to protect the "peace and health" of residents. A legislative starting paper has been filed by the city's local government. If passed, the new law could come into effect next month and last until November – something which local vendors will not be best pleased about, considering they are accustomed to selling gelato late at night as part of Italian culture. The proposal would ban all takeaway food, including pizza and drinks, after 12.30am on weekdays and 1.30am on weekends and public holidays - all...

Protests have erupted in Rome after the lower house of Italy's parliament passed new legislation allowing anti-abortion activists to enter abortion clinics. The measure, passed by Meloni's far-right Brothers of Italy party, is part of a package of initiatives that are funded by the European Union's post-Covid recovery fund, and is supposedly an attempt at “involving non-profits with experience providing maternity support in family planning clinics”. The amendment was approved by the lower house last Thursday by a margin of 140 votes to 91, and will be voted on by the Italian Senate. Prime Mini...

The Greens and Left Alliance, in agreement with Roberto Salis, has decided to nominate his daughter Ilaria, an anti-fascist activist who was detained in Hungary, on its lists in the next European elections. She was arrested in Budapest last year on suspicion of being involved in attacks against participants in Hungary's Day of commemorations. The festivities drum up scores of neo-Nazis who honour the failed escape attempt by Nazi forces and Hungarian soldiers out of Budapest during the Red Army's siege of the city in 1945. The Italian government called her appearance in court 'humiliating' as ...

EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell has warned the Middle East is on the edge of a regional war. He made the comments on the Italian resort island of Capri where G7 foreign ministers are meeting to discuss the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. “Humanitarian catastrophe continues," he said. "Humanitarian support has increased, but [it’s] very, very, very, very insufficient. We have to ask Israel for a restrained answer to the Iranians attack. We cannot escalate." “I don’t want to exaggerate but we are on the edge of a war, a regional war in the Middle East, which will be sending shockwaves to th...
