Ciudad Juárez (Mexico) (AFP) - More than a thousand migrants rode atop a freight train to the edge of the US border on Tuesday after dodging authorities on a 10-day journey through Mexico. Their trip had been beset by migration agencies' efforts to get them off the train, said Daiverson Munoz, a 20-year-old from Venezuela. "And we're stuck in the middle of the desert. But it's nothing, we're here and we feel super happy because we're about to realize our dream. It's been hard but not impossible." As soon as they arrived in Ciudad Juarez, the group of mainly Venezuelan migrants threw their belo...

Manzanillo (Mexico) (AFP) - Mexico's Pacific port city of Manzanillo is on the front line of the fight against fentanyl -- a drug blamed for tens of thousands of deaths in the United States. Since last year, agents at the port have been tasked with finding and seizing precursor chemicals used in the production of the synthetic opioid 50 times more potent than heroin and much easier and cheaper to produce. This on top of the methamphetamines, cocaine and marijuana they were already on the lookout for among the 3.5 million ship containers that pass through Manzanillo every year. "It's not that (...

Mexico City (AFP) - Mexico is on tenterhooks awaiting fresh revelations from the US trial of former security chief Genaro Garcia Luna, accused of receiving vast sums of money to allow the notorious Sinaloa cartel to smuggle cocaine. The trial of Garcia Luna, who was Mexico's public security minister from 2006 to 2012, began on Monday at the same New York court that handed convicted drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman a life sentence in 2019. The prosecution's first witness, an ex-police officer who later worked for Guzman's Sinaloa cartel, said he had witnessed former gang boss Arturo Beltran ...

Tijuana (Mexico) (AFP) - While many migrants risk their lives chasing the American dream, Gabriel Zarate fled the rising cost of living in California and moved to the Mexican border city of Tijuana. The 38-year-old Chilean American now crosses over to work in San Diego as an English teacher during the day and returns home in the evening to Mexico. "One of the biggest reasons is the cost of living in Tijuana. It's significantly cheaper than in California," Zarate said. Also, he added: "I love Mexican people and food." His neighbor and fellow English teacher Mike Rachfal also made the move from ...

Reynosa (Mexico) (AFP) - Haitian asylum seekers Jocelyn and Berline Jean-Philippe breathed a sigh of relief as they entered the United States legally from Mexico -- in time, they hoped, for their unborn child to become a US citizen. It is a dream shared by other parents-to-be who make the often-dangerous journey fleeing poverty and violence in their countries in search of a better life for their children. "If my son's born there (the United States), it's better for me and for him," Jocelyn Jean-Philippe said before crossing from Reynosa in northern Mexico to McAllen, Texas. It was the culminat...

Washington (AFP) - A Texas man admitted to trying to smuggle two people into the United States in a coffin draped with an American flag -- like those that carry soldiers killed in combat -- the Justice Department said Wednesday. The suspect, 33-year-old Zachary Blood, was caught when in October he drove a van "modified to transport caskets" to a checkpoint near the US-Mexico border in Texas, federal prosecutor Jennifer Lowery's office said in a statement. When asked by agents what he was transporting, Blood responded "dead guy, Navy guy," according to the statement. "However, the coffin was ...

Washington (AFP) - Almost 180,000 migrants were apprehended attempting to enter the United States from Mexico in December, official figures published Monday showed. The additional 178,840 detentions in December bring the total number of apprehensions at the US southern border in 2021 to almost two million -- a record. The Republican Party quickly accused Democratic President Joe Biden and his Vice President Kamala Harris of having created a "historic humanitarian crisis." "On their watch, cartels and smugglers are thriving, border officials are overwhelmed, our communities are less safe," sa...

Washington (AFP) - The US Justice Department has requested a four-year prison sentence for the wife of jailed Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. Arrested in February at Dulles International Airport outside Washington, Emma Coronel Aispuro pleaded guilty in June to all three counts against her, including drug trafficking and money laundering. Prosecutors also asked that she be sentenced to five years of supervised release and a payment of $1.5 million, according to a court document released Thursday. Guzman was the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, one of Mexico's most notorious drug traf...

Washington (AFP) - The United States will open its land borders with Mexico and Canada in early November to non-essential travelers who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19, a senior White House official announced Tuesday. The official said the administration would give the "precise date very soon" -- both for land crossings as well as international air travel, which would be timed to "go together." The United States had already announced in September that it would lift bans in November on all vaccinated air passengers who undergo testing and contact tracing. In an effort to slow the spread o...

Mexico City (AFP) - With the United States turning away migrants at its southern border, Mexico is also taking a firm stance against undocumented arrivals, including thousands of Haitian asylum seekers. Mexico, which will host US Secretary of State Antony Blinken for talks on Friday, recorded 90,314 asylum requests from January to September, according to the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance. That compares with 70,406 for the whole of 2019 and 41,059 in 2020, when the pandemic reduced the number of applications for refugee status in Mexico. As usual, Hondurans make up the largest propo...
