PHILADELPHIA — Mütter Museum curator Anna N. Dhody opened a package Tuesday morning that arrived at the museum by mail. Inside was a glass jar containing two preserved fetuses, and a letter from someone claiming to be a retired physician who wanted to make a donation. “I saw the letter and was like, ‘Oh no, no no, I have to make a few calls,’” said Dhody, who promptly called the police. “This is not normal procedure.” The package was addressed to Dhody, but did not have a return address. The letter was scant and included no other details about the sender or the fetuses, Dhody said. Police are ...

FLORENCE, Italy — The small, tan taxi hurtled down a Florentine side street too narrow for baton twirling. My driver sliced over the Arno River on one of the city’s short stone bridges, arriving quickly below the Fortezza da Basso — a 14th century fortress spliced into the former city walls and now looming over the opposite bank like a hibernating bear blocking the road. Above the tall Gothic arch at the entrance, a large Italian flag pirouetted in the winter breeze. An oversized, white-faced clock within said PITTI in black letters. This was Pitti Uomo, the semiannual fashion trade show that ...

It was Nov. 5 when the switch from daylight saving time hit us with its annual reminder that the world can be a dark place. Not only was it creeping night into our day, but it introduced rain as if a switch had been flipped to turn off the sun. My husband, Benjamin, and I were tired, both mentally and physically, from running three businesses out of our home. And so, we took advantage of Veterans Day weekend by booking a flight and running to the unknown. In this case, it was San Antonio, Texas. Neither of us had ever been, nor had we visited Texas in decades. When we first started dating, we ...

The Adachi Museum of Art was the passion project of local businessman, art collector and garden designer Adachi Zenko (1899-1990). Hoping to enhance the artistic culture of his hometown, he created a place where Japanese aesthetics could be experienced in the form of ceramics, lacquerware, paintings and expansive traditional gardens. The gardens in particular are the museum’s pride because in 2022, The Journal of Japanese Gardening ranked them as the most beautiful in Japan for their twentieth consecutive year. This ranking compares almost 1,000 gardens, including some located in Kyoto and Tok...

The Tottori Sand Museum is the world’s only indoor museum dedicated to the art of sand sculptures. Though Tottori is Japan’s least populous prefecture, its Sand Museum has become a hotspot for sculptors from around the world, featured in global news outlets like The New York Times. The installations are made with leftover sand from the nearby Tottori Sand Dunes, a national park with camel photo ops and dunes so steep that climbing them might feel like impromptu training for a Mount Fuji ascent. Around the world in sandThe Sand Museum opened in Tottori in 2006 with an outdoor exhibition with It...
