Hong Kong’s opposition-free legislature has unanimously passed new homegrown security legislation, making treason, insurrection and sabotage punishable by up to life in prison, and rejecting Western criticism that the law would further restrict the city’s freedoms. Lawmakers gathered in the Legislative Council (LegCo) Chamber on Tuesday to vote on the Safeguarding National Security Bill, just days after a draft was introduced to the legislature. All 89 legislators voted in favour of the bill’s passage. In an unprecedented move, LegCo President Andrew Leung also cast a vote, saying: “As the pre...

Hong Kong’s flagship carrier Cathay Pacific lacked the experience and digital capability to predict a manpower shortage, the Civil Aviation Department has found, after the flagship carrier cancelled more than 780 flights from December to February. Cathay attributed the cancellations over the peak travel period to an “unanticipated and sustained increase in pilot sickness, most likely caused by a peak in seasonal influenza,” according to the airline’s report submitted to the department. The carrier said it had conducted projections to ensure that it had enough pilots for the rest of the 2024 sc...

The planned redevelopment of parts of Hong Kong’s historic Flower Market has come under fire, with a lawmaker and a former city leader urging the authorities to give greater consideration to the area’s cultural importance. The Urban Renewal Authority (URA) announced last Friday a plan to redevelop six sites around Mong Kok’s flower market, citing traffic congestion and limited space for pedestrians. The project would involve 33 ground floor shops and 275 households and is expected to be completed in 2035-2036. Writing on Facebook last Friday, former leader Leung Chin-ying, who is also a charte...

Mary Kwan moved into Tai Hang Sai Estate soon after it was completed in 1965. Almost 60 years later, the 80 year-old is preparing to quit her eighth-floor flat for a transitional housing project in Tai Po. Tai Hang Sai Estate, Hong Kong’s only privately-owned low-rental housing estate, is set to be demolished and redeveloped, which is why Kwan – and many of her former neighbours – must vacate their homes. Because the deadline to move out was initially set for mid-March, Kwan has already packed most of her bags, which were stacked next to her sofa when HKFP spoke to her on Tuesday. Built in 196...

A key prosecution witness in the national security trial of media mogul Jimmy Lai has named two British public relations agencies as helping UK-based Hong Kong activists campaign and meet with politicians in the wake of the 2019 protests and unrest. Li said Whitehouse Consultancy linked the activists with British lawmakers to rai...
