President Joe Biden marked Earth Day by announcing $7 billion (€6.6 billion) in federal grants for residential solar projects serving 900,000-plus households in low- and middle-income communities. He also criticised Republicans who want to gut his policies to address climate change. Seeking re-election in November, Biden said, "Despite the overwhelming devastation in red and blue states, there are still those who deny the climate is in crisis." He took specific aim at supporters of former President Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" movement. "My MAGA Republican friends don't seem to th...

BP has recently received interest for a multi-billion pound takeover from the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc). However, talks were stalled at the initial stage, due to Adnoc having concerns about how BP would fit within its overall strategy. The complicated political and legal aspect of the deal was also a concern, due to Adnoc being the UAE’s state oil company and BP having significant economic importance to the UK. The two companies have long been associates in the Middle East and have even launched a major Egyptian gas field joint venture back in February. Before the current Israel-H...

The European Commission today (April 2) announced it had cleared the way for Greece to invest €1bn to support two landmark renewable energy production and storage projects to be completed by mid-2025. The Faethon Project foresees construction of two photovoltaic units, each with a capacity of 252 MW, along with integrated molten-salt thermal storage units and an extra-high voltage substation. This project is designed to enable surplus energy to be stored and converted for use in times of peak electricity consumption. The Seli Project, entails the construction of a 309 MW photovoltaic unit with...

The wind gusting across north German farm country brings much to the village of Sprakebuell: fog and rain from the sea, the occasional migrating stork, and the faint smell of manure in the newly fertilised fields. And perhaps best of all, money - from selling the electricity generated by the wind turbines studding the flat green fields stretching out to the North Sea. A slice of the cash goes to the villagers themselves, with the local buy-in making this windy farming enclave near the border with Denmark a showcase for ways to push ahead with renewable energy projects. It's not easy when headw...

Deep in the Arizona desert, a Danish company is building a massive solar farm that includes batteries that charge when the sun is shining and supply energy back to the electric grid when it's not. “Solar farms only produce when the sun shines, and the turbines only produce when the wind blows,” said Ørsted CEO Mads Nipper. “For us to maximise the availability of the green power, 24-7, we have to store some of it too.” Back in Arizona, Ørsted’s Eleven Mile Solar Center covers 2,000 acres in rural Pinal County. It has 857,000 solar panels and more than 2,000 cubes that look like large shipping c...

Germany's greenhouse gas emissions dropped by one-tenth last year, thanks to their investment in renewables and high energy prices which may have driven down demand. Europe's biggest economy is trying to cut their emissions by 65 per cent, compared with 1990, by 2030. These latest stats put them on track to reach a cut of almost 64 per cent by that date. “Germany is on course, for the first time,” Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck, who is also the economy and climate minister, says in a statement. “If we stick to our course, we will reach our 2030 climate targets.” How is Germany reducing its emis...

A French town is installing a canopy of solar panels over its cemetery that will distribute energy to local residents. The idea didn’t start with solar. Saint-Joachim is located in the middle of the Brière marsh - a vast peat bog north of the Loire estuary. When it outgrew its churchyard cemetery in 1970, a new graveyard was created to the east of the town’s main island, a drop from six to zero metres above sea level. Upsettingly for families with loved ones buried there, that means the cemetery often floods in winter. Draining the ground would be a constant battle with the wetland, so Saint-J...

A huge sand battery is set to slash the carbon emissions of a Finnish town. The industrial-scale storage unit in Pornainen, southern Finland, will be the world’s biggest sand battery when it comes online within a couple of years. Capable of storing 100 MWh of thermal energy from solar and wind sources, it will enable residents to eliminate oil from their district heating network, helping to cut emissions by nearly 70 per cent. "It's exciting to build a large-scale thermal energy storage, which will also act as a primary production plant in Pornainen's district heating network,” says Liisa Nask...
