“There really is this extraterrestrial quality to sperm whales,” says Patrick Dykstra, a cinematographer with a fascination for underwater sea life. His interest in whales — and his interactions with them — are captured in the latest installment of the PBS series “Nature.” “Patrick and the Whale” has an appealing, low-key sensibility that’s missing from similar but more frantic programming from NatGeo, which is too often filled with hokey, intrusive music and hyperbolic hosts. Director Mark Fletcher avoids those faux theatrics and the episode’s meditative qualities are reflective of the team’s...

It’s fascinating that Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke, longtime filmmaking collaborators and spouses, and the creative team behind the queer exploitation flick “Drive-Away Dolls,” have repeatedly — and lovingly — described their new film as “trashy” in interviews. It’s a way of nodding to influences like the “Pope of Trash” himself, John Waters, and titillating B-movie king Russ Meyer. Or perhaps it’s a way to get ahead of, and away from, certain expectations tied to Coen and his former filmmaking partner, his brother Joel. This ain’t your daddy’s “No Country for Old Men,” after all. “Drive-Away D...

There’s a moment late in Denis Villeneuve’s sweeping sci-fi epic “Dune: Part Two,” when the camera lingers on a hand emerging out of desert sand, forming into a fist. It’s a small but apt visual metaphor for this sequel’s story, written by Villeneuve and Jon Spaihts, which takes all of the foundational exposition carefully laid in “Dune: Part One,” and kicks the plot of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel into spice-powered motion. In “Dune: Part Two,” power, and violence, rise from the desert sand of the planet Arrakis, where young Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) has found his true path among the de...

I’ve reviewed more than a few projectors, and I’ve discovered they are not a “one size fits all” kind of gadget. Unlike flat screen TVs, which all basically look alike, projectors vary in size and features, and before you buy one, you need to ask yourself some questions about your needs. Is the projector going to be mounted permanently in a home theater? Do you need one for meetings at the office? Perhaps you travel a lot for work and need a projector that’s easy to pack in a briefcase. Today I’m reviewing the Dangbei Atom smart home projector ($899 from dangbei.com or Amazon). Early purchaser...

While the “faith-based film” has evolved over the years, there’s one tried-and-true formula this particular type of movie can’t quit: an improbable true story about a sick child in a perilous situation starring a popular actress (see: Jennifer Garner in “Miracles From Heaven”; Chrissy Metz in “Breakthrough”). In this kind of film, the drama remains focused on human kindness and community rather than specific beliefs. Religious organizations offer emotional and material support to the characters, but mainly exist in the background, so the message is not overly preachy. But one would have to be ...

It’s been 14 years since the Lexus GX benefited from a total makeover, and a lot has changed since 2010. In that time, the Lexus GX has spent much of its time in the urban jungle, with the only green most GXs ever see being at the local country club. That may change with the redesigned 2024 Lexus GX 550, a body-on-frame SUV that finally resembles what it’s capable of achieving. Severely square-jawed and unremittingly horizontal, its deign banishes its mall-crawling snobbery for some serious trail boss boldness. And its capability is more than skin deep. It rides on the same Toyota corporate GA...

Cat Power performed an evening of Bob Dylan covers at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Wednesday, executing a mesmerizing display of artistic admiration in one of the world’s most famous venues. Power’s show, billed as Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert, has now made its way to a handful American cities. The singer-songwriter first performed the setin November 2022 at the prestigious London venue, playing the same set of half-acoustic, half-electric songs Dylan performed there nearly 60 years ago. “Happy Valentine’s,” she said from the Carnegie stage, “especially for us...

Once upon a time, comic book movies used to be camp, riding the line of silliness and sincerity that would suit the cinematic adaptation of a slim illustrated volume about superheroes and their exploits. But over 20 years ago, the superhero industrial complex rejected camp, becoming dark and gritty, then sarcastic and flip, then cycling back to wholesomely earnest again for a time. However, in these days of waning superhero enthusiasm, fatigue setting in, it seems there’s an opening for comic book movies to be stupid — stupidly fun — again, especially if “Madame Web” can tell their fortunes. T...

Imagine commissioning a car like ordering a custom suit — an automobile tailored specifically to the client. You may think of Rolls-Royce and Bentley with veneers and hides and artful stitching, but as Cadillac raises its new electric flagship, the menu from which wealthy drivers dine includes a dose of mid-century allure. Over the past five years, Rolls-Royce noted increased enthusiasm for bespoke autos among wealthy Americans, and while they’re finally embracing bespoke, it's simply how Rolls-Royce creates automobiles. “We do some of the work in dealerships — each has colors, veneers and cus...
