Tunisia, where I had the privilege to serve as the US ambassador during its revolution and the initial stages of its democratic transition, presents a unique opportunity for the United States and the European Union to demonstrate their commitment to democracy. Having championed the country's revolution and democratic transition, the US and the EU must now reaffirm their support for Tunisia's democratic path. When the European Commission offers funds to Tunisia as part of a migration and development deal it should ensure that this is not a short-term solution and doesn’t end up directly in the ...

"Do we need to work with third countries to manage migration? My answer is definitely yes. We are already doing that and it's necessary to do it even more. Nobody can manage migration alone," the European Commissioner for Home Affairs said on Tuesday afternoon. "So we need to work with partner countries and we need to work along the routes and we need to fight the smugglers together." "Should we send away people that are on the EU territory applying for asylum to a third country? My answer is no. (We're) not open for that in the Pact." Johansson was referring to the New Pact on Migration and A...

Tunisia's coast guard retrieved the bodies of nine people who died after their boat sank on Thursday, marking the latest disaster for migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe. The coast guard also retrieved 45 people from the boat after it started to fill with water around six kilometres off the coast of Zarzis, a common departure point near Tunisia's border with Libya. Coast guard spokesman Houssameddine Jbabli said the boat, which was carrying non-Tunisian passengers, likely embarked from Libya. He added that survivors were transported to a local hospital in Tunisia. Several ...

Washington (AFP) - A leading US senator called Tuesday on European allies to stand firm on democracy in Tunisia before approving an IMF bailout, accusing President Kais Saied of long-term damage through his power grabs. Chris Murphy, who leads the Senate subcommittee on relations with the Middle East, also faulted President Joe Biden, a fellow Democrat, for maintaining US assistance to Tunisia's military. Tunisia reached a deal in principle in October with the International Monetary Fund for nearly $2 billion to shore up a sinking economy, but the bailout still needs approval by the IMF board ...

Washington (AFP) - The World Bank is pausing talks over its future engagement with Tunisia following anti-immigrant comments made by the country's president, Kais Saied, according to an internal message to staff seen by AFP. In the message sent on Sunday evening, the bank's outgoing President David Malpass said Saied's tirade had triggered "racially motivated harassment and even violence," and that the institution had postponed a planned meeting involving Tunisia until further notice. "Given the situation, management has decided to pause the Country Partnership Framework and withdraw it from B...

Washington (AFP) - The United States on Tuesday praised the appointment of a new Tunisian government as a positive step and encouraged further action three months after a presidential power grab. "The new government, which includes 10 female ministers, is a welcome step forwards towards addressing the significant economic, health and social challenges facing the country," State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters. "We look forward to further announcements to establish a broadly inclusive process for a rapid return to constitutional order," he said. Najla Bouden was named Monday as th...

Washington (AFP) - Tunisia should swiftly return to its "democratic path", a top White House official on Saturday told President Kais Saied, days after his shock power grab that included suspending parliament. In an hour-long call with Saied, President Joe Biden's national security adviser Jake Sullivan noted support for "Tunisian democracy based on fundamental rights, strong institutions and a commitment to the rule of law", according to a White House statement. Saied on July 25 sacked premier Hichem Mechichi and suspended parliament for 30 days. He ordered a graft crackdown targeting 460 bus...
