The sophistication of wooden weapons found at Schöningen in central Germany have revolutionized ideas about Palaeolithic, or Old Stone Age, man living some 300,000 years ago. An inventory from the site, which was excavated in the late 1990s, has now revealed how good they were at making other wooden tools. The 187 finds reveal a broad spectrum of woodworking techniques, the group led by Dirk Leder of the Lower Saxony monuments office report in the US journal The Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS). The finds, which were made in an open-cast lignite mine, include at least 20 h...

Scientists in the UK have found evidence that microplastics are contaminating archaeological soil samples. The discovery has the potential to upend the way historical remains are preserved. Tiny particles of microplastics were discovered seven metres underground in samples dating from the first or early second century. They were first excavated in the 1980s. “This feels like an important moment, confirming what we should have expected: that what were previously thought to be pristine archaeological deposits, ripe for investigation, are in fact contaminated with plastics, and that this includes...

Unlike most histories of a country, the 'Archaeological Atlas of France' does not include Kings, Presidents, revolutions or great battles. Instead, it recounts thousands of years of human occupation, including enormous changes in France's borders, its climate, population and the way of life of its inhabitants. 100 new maps were created from the findings of thousands of excavations over the past two decades. What was discovered in the soil provided clues about human societies who either buried items themselves, for example in tombs, or simply by the passage of time. Published by Inrap, the Nati...
