Washington (AFP) - US President Joe Biden and Iraq's Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani said Monday they would keep working towards the withdrawal of a US-led anti-jihadist coalition in the country. Their meeting at the White House came amid soaring tensions in the Middle East after Iraq's neighbor Iran launched a massive aerial attack on US ally Israel over the weekend. The US-led military coalition was formed in 2014 to fight the Islamic State group -- the year the jihadists overran nearly a third of Iraq's territory and swaths of neighboring Syria. Iraq has been trying to stay out of reg...

Niamey (Niger) (AFP) - Thousands of people in Niger's capital on Saturday protested for the immediate departure of US soldiers from the north, after the military junta in Niamey said it was withdrawing from a military agreement with Washington. Following a July coup, the West African country said in mid-March that the 2012 cooperation agreement had been "unilaterally imposed" by the United States. Students and several prominent figures from the military regime were amongst the crowd in front of the National Assembly Headquarters in Niamey. The crowd was heard chanting "Down with American im...

Ukraine on Wednesday lowered the military conscription age from 27 to 25 in an effort to replenish its military after more than two years of war following Russia’s full-scale invasion. The new mobilisation law came into force a day after Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed it. Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, passed it last year. It was not immediately clear why Zelenskyy took so long to sign the measure into law. He made only a brief public comment about it at a news conference in Kyiv on Wednesday with Finnish President Alexander Stubb. An audit requested by Ukraine's recen...

She is also directing the National Guard to make 750 members "available to supplement this effort," it add...

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius visited troops in Bavaria who will be affected by the move. He said Germany has "experience with foreign deployments, including through the Battle Group". "Nevertheless, the conditions here are different, as we are talking about several years and, in many cases, deployments accompanied by families...

The UN’s humanitarian appeal to meet needs in Ukraine is only 10% funded for 2024, the country’s resident coordinator said Wednesday, putting in jeopardy crucial assistance needed to reach those in need across frontline areas. Denise Brown, the UN’s top representative in Ukraine, said an estimated 8.5 million Ukrainians living in dire conditions near combat zones risk going without basic humanitarian deliveries, including food and water. The UN's annual appeal for Ukraine is $3.1 billion. “If we don’t receive that money, I don’t know where that money is going to come from,” Brown told The Asso...

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has pushed European countries to increase their military spending and strengthen their defence, as they scramble to reverse the shrinking of their armies that has occurred over the past decade or so. But their efforts have met a huge challenge: a lack of recruits willing to join their military forces. Despite new investment and a recent recruitment push, Germany recently announced that its troop numbers fell slightly last year. The country’s defence ministry said earlier this month that its army - the Bundeswehr - shrank by about 1,500 troops in 2023, for a total o...
