Caffeine can help sustain attention over long periods of time, according to new experimental research
New research published in Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology has found that caffeine can help adolescents pay attention for longer periods of time. Though it is commonly assumed that caffeine enhances vigilance in such a manner, until now experimental evidence had been lacking or inconclusive.“I have often used caffeine, particularly coffee or energy gum, to keep alertness during long class periods, meetings, and car drives, and many of my colleagues and friends also use caffeine to remain mentally sharp,” said study author Robert Cooper, a PhD candidate at the University at Buffalo....

The things they say:
"Thanks to (director) Justin Lin, we were able to find a little bit more attention and love for the girls in the movie, and so I’m really hopeful that that shows through in the final product... I think a lot of the boys just always, like, one-dimensionalised (sic) all the females. So it’s like, if Mia is on screen, they’ll think, 'Oh, she’s the mother of the kid with the Paul Walker character, so we need to stick to the motherly stuff whenever she speaks', or they’ll be like, 'Oh look, we have Natalie - she’s the amazing young, sexy creature, so let’s always have the boys hitting on her'." COVID-19’s other child
While our government is spending a lot of attention on the health crisis that has been fathered by the novel coronavirus, not enough attention is being devoted to COVID-19’s other child — the economic crisis. The economic catastrophe spawned by the pandemic is humongous, the likes of which we have never seen since World War II.As of yesterday, the number of people infected by the virus in our country totals 237,365, of which 3,875 have died. On the other hand, 27.3 million Filipinos — a staggering 45.5 percent of our country’s adult labor force — have lost their jobs or livelihood, according t...

Interview: Historian Jeffrey Wasserstrom says world must keep paying attention to Hong Kong despite pandemic distractions
When historian Jeffrey Wasserstrom was contemplating Hong Kong’s future as he wrote his book on last year’s protests, he never imagined that freedoms would come under attack so soon after Beijing’s national security law was passed.“I’d say this was the picture that I feared,” he told HKFP, “but it’s happened faster than anybody expected, including me.”Wasserstrom’s account, presciently entitled Vigil: Hong Kong on the Brink, was one of pragmatic pessimism. “There is little stopping Beijing from destroying many of Hong Kong’s institutions,” he wrote. Elsewhere, he described the city as “Beijing...
