New York (AFP) - The NBA banned Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter for life on Wednesday after a bombshell probe found he bet on league matches -- dubbed a "cardinal sin" by NBA commissioner Adam Silver. The league said that Porter, who spent part of his season in the NBA and part of it in the developmental G League, also shared private information on his fitness with a sports bettor and removed himself from a game to influence wagers on his own play. "There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sp...

Products containing PFAS or ‘forever chemicals’ could soon face tight restrictions in France. The first draft of a bill banning certain products containing the harmful chemicals was approved unanimously by the National Assembly on Thursday. It particularly targets the manufacture, import and sale of cosmetics, clothing and ski wax containing PFAS. French politician and environmentalist Nicolas Thierry, who introduced the bill, hailed the decision a “huge victory in the recognition of the health scandal of the century,” adding, “This vote is historic.” However, some products - including Tefal p...

Germany has partially legalised the possession of marijuana with new legislation taking effect on April 1. Public possession of 25g of cannabis is decriminalised and people will be allowed to possess up to 50g of cannabis at home and cultivate three plants. The new law, however, bans advertising for marijuana and prohibits consumption by minors or in front of minors. Smoking will also be banned within 200 metres of schools, playgrounds, and sports fields. Smoking marijuana in "pedestrian zones" between 7:00 am and 8:00 pm is also prohibited. From July, the law allows for non-commercial cannabi...

Spain’s privacy watchdog has ordered for Worldcoin, the company created by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman that scans eyeballs to make digital IDs in exchange for cryptocurrency, to cease its operations in the country for three months amid concerns over what it is doing with users' personal information. The stated goal of Worldcoin is to give people a form of identification that could never be stolen or duplicated. It says the way it can do this is by creating a "World ID" by scanning someone's eyeballs through "orbs" - a device that captures an image of their irises, the colored parts of the eyes. Worl...

France has introduced a temporary ban on nearly all commercial fishing in the Bay of Biscay in an effort to protect dolphins. It will last a month, beginning on 22 January and continuing until 20 February. The measure applies to both French and foreign fishing companies. Washington (AFP) - Wyoming on Friday became the first US state to ban the use of abortion pills, the latest salvo in a campaign by conservative-led states to roll back access to abortion. After signing the ban on abortion pills, Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon appealed to legislators to act further by proposing a total ban on abortion be added to the state constitution and then putting it before voters for approval. "I believe this question needs to be decided as soon as possible so that the issue of abortion in Wyoming can be finally resolved, and that is best done with a vote of the people," th...

New York (AFP) - Airbnb has made permanent its pandemic-era prohibition of parties at the properties rented out globally through its app, saying Tuesday the rules have been effective against problematic events. The rental platform has gradually tightened its policies on parties after complaints and some high-profile trouble, including a 2019 shooting that killed five in California. Airbnb provisionally barred events in 2020 as a measure against the spread of Covid, but it turned out to also be effective against large or disruptive gatherings. "Over time, the party ban became much more than a p...

San Francisco (AFP) - Facebook on Friday restricted Russian state media's ability to earn money on the social media platform as Moscow's invasion of neighboring Ukraine reached the streets of Kyiv.
