Transport alone is set to make up almost half of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2030, a new analysis from campaign group Transport & Environment (T&E) has found. Emissions from transport across the continent have increased by more than a quarter since 1990 despite overall emissions being in decline. Since its peak in 2007, transport has been decarbonising more than three times slower than the rest of the economy, T&E found. “The good news is transport emissions in Europe have peaked. The bad news is other sectors are decarbonising three times faster,” says William Todts, executive direct...

Air pollution in the Lombardy region of Italy has pushed authorities to introduce strict new rules. Restrictions have been brought in on heating homes, spreading sewage on crops and the use of heavy motor vehicles during the daytime. By Tuesday, nine of the region’s 12 provinces, including Milan, were impacted by the smog emergency. Parisians were voting Sunday whether to muscle SUVs off the French capital’s streets by making them much more expensive to park, the latest leg in a drive by Socialist Mayor Anne Hidalgo to make the host city for this year’s Olympic Games greener and friendlier for pedestrians and cyclists. Hidalgo is looking for voters’ backing for a proposal to triple parking fees for SUV drivers from out of town. In get-out-the-vote posts on social media, Hidalgo argued that SUVs take up too much space on narrow Parisian streets, are too polluting and "threaten our health and our planet," and cause more tra...

The ECA, the bloc's budget and policy watchdog, examined EU efforts to reduce CO2 emissions from passenger cars. The bloc aims to meet a zero-emissions target for new passenger cars by 2035, with benchmarks along the way. Audito...
