Germany's chemicals and pharmaceuticals sector kicked off the new pay and conditions round with talks in Frankenthal for the Rhineland-Palatinate region on Monday. The Rhineland-Palatinate round forms the start of negotiations across nine regions in Germany, with the IG BCE putting forward a demand for a 7% increase for around 68,500 workers in the region. The first round of talks at federal level is set for Thuringia on May 14 and 15. A total of 585,000 workers are employed in the sector in Germany. Chief negotiator for the employers in Rhineland-Palatinate, Hendrik Müller, said on Monday: "T...

The USA has placed the first ever federal limits on toxic 'forever chemicals' in drinking water. The rule, finalised by the Biden administration on Wednesday 10 April, requires utilities to reduce the chemicals to the lowest level they can be reliably measured. Officials say this will reduce exposure for 100 million people and help prevent thousands of illnesses, including cancers. It is the first national drinking water limit on toxic PFAS, or perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, which are widespread and long lasting in the environment. Health advocates praised the Environmental Pro...

Products containing PFAS or ‘forever chemicals’ could soon face tight restrictions in France. The first draft of a bill banning certain products containing the harmful chemicals was approved unanimously by the National Assembly on Thursday. It particularly targets the manufacture, import and sale of cosmetics, clothing and ski wax containing PFAS. French politician and environmentalist Nicolas Thierry, who introduced the bill, hailed the decision a “huge victory in the recognition of the health scandal of the century,” adding, “This vote is historic.” However, some products - including Tefal p...

A new EU law on fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases) designed to curb man-made emissions from air conditioners, refrigerators and heat pumps coming into force today (March 11) risks increasing exposure to dangerous ‘forever chemicals’, an NGO has warned. The International Chemical Secretariat (ChemSec) — an NGO which advocates for the substitution of toxic chemicals with safer alternatives — warned that hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) remain largely unregulated under the new law. HFOs are a form of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS), dubbed forever chemicals because they are difficult to rem...

Residues of toxic “forever chemicals” substances traceable on fruit and vegetables has reportedly tripled in the EU over the last 10 years, according to an NGO report published today (27 February). The Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Europe report purported to track residues of 31 Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) — known as “forever chemicals” because they are impossible to eradicate — in fruit and vegetables in the EU between 2011 and 2021. The study, based on official data from the national monitoring programmes of pesticide residues in food, focused on Austria, Belgium, France, Ger...

What we eat and where we eat it could impact the level of forever chemicals in our blood, according to researchers in the US. They asked more than 700 people across two groups a series of questions about their diet including how frequently they consumed certain foods and beverages - like dark green vegetables, bread, milk sports drinks and tea - and tested the levels of PFAS in their blood. Researchers also asked them how often they ate food prepared at home, at a fast food restaurant or at a non-fast food restaurant. They used this information to hypothesise how often participants came into c...

German paint and ink manufacturers saw sales drop by 1.47 million tons in 2023, a decrease of 3% over the previous year, according to the Association of the German Paint and Printing Ink Industry (VdL) on Monday. The industry group said the drop in sales volume was primarily driven by the downturn in Germany's construction industry, which has struggled with rising costs and high interest rates. Nonetheless, turnover rose by just under 2% to €6.1 billion ($6.6 billion) as a result of higher prices amid inflation, said VdL leader Peter Jansen. In addition to the weak domestic market, a significa...

Plants can do astonishing things. As if the wonders of photosynthesis aren’t enough - producing oxygen from the sun to enable virtually all life on Earth - people have collaborated with plants on some mind-blowing projects. Scientists have taught spinach to send emails; generated electricity from shrubs; and discovered how they teach their offspring to adapt to climate change. But some of the things humans are doing to plants are also limiting their powers, a new study on tomatoes shows. Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have investigated what happens when tomatoes are...

Los Angeles (AFP) - A US jury on Monday ordered chemical company Monsanto to pay $857 million to seven people at a school in the western state of Washington who said they were sickened by chemicals leaking from light fittings. The ruling is the latest legal setback for Monsanto, which is already grappling with hefty legal bills after losing court cases over its glyphosate-based weedkiller Roundup. The jury said the company, owned by German pharmaceutical giant Bayer, had sold the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) found in the fittings that the group of students and parent volunteers at Sky Vall...
