Washington (AFP) - President Joe Biden's government on Thursday finalized sweeping plans to curb planet-warming emissions from the nation's fossil fuel plants as part of the United States' efforts to confront the climate crisis. Hailed as among the most significant tools ever developed for reducing greenhouse gases from the power sector, the rules will require existing coal-fired plants and new high capacity gas-fired plants to reduce their carbon dioxide output by 90 percent, once they take effect. It comes as Democratic incumbent Biden faces a tough election rematch against Republican Donald...

A court in Berlin handed down suspended sentences for three climate activists responsible for a paint attack on the German capital's famous Brandenburg Gate in September last year. The district court found the members of the Last Generation climate group guilty of causing damage to property and gave each of them an eight-month suspended sentence. The 22, 28 and 64-year-old defendants had previously confessed to having spray orange paint on the landmark on September 17, 2023. They had argued that the action was an "appropriate and necessary protest" in view of the climate crisis. The court disa...

Cities introducing low emissions zones have cleaner air than those without, according to preliminary research by health insurers comparing Belgian cities Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent with other cities. The findings were announced in Brussels today (April 23) during an event on clean cities organised in association with Belgium's presidency of the EU Council ahead of a key vote at the European Parliament tomorrow on the Air and Ambient Quality Directive (AAQD). Low emission zones were introduced in Antwerp and Brussels in 2017 and 2018 respectively, leading to a drop in air pollutants such as bl...

Tropical fish are invading some Australian waters thanks to climate change, a new study released on Tuesday has found. The fish are travelling the Australian ecosystems as larvae caught in the Eastern Australian Current, a University of Adelaide study of shallow-water fish communities on rocky reefs in south-eastern Australia found. "These larvae would not normally survive in the cooler Australian ocean water, but the warming Eastern Australian Current keeps the baby fish warm and increases their likelihood of survival," chief investigator of the study Ivan Nagelkerken said. The tropical fish ...

A new report has warned that climate change is creating a "cocktail of hazards" likely to affect more than 70% of the global workforce. The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that 2.4 billion of the world's 3.4 billion workers will be exposed to excessive heat during their working lives. Workers in agriculture and other sectors involving open-air activities are particularly affected by extreme heat and UV radiation, which can cause health conditions such as skin cancer and cardiovascular diseases. An estimated 19,000 people die every year across the globe as a result of excessiv...
