An edited version is republished in Global Voices under a media partnership. The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, does not like to compete. When he sees an electoral threat, he imposes sanctions or new rules on its adversaries. He doesn't let go of the ball of power. It even seems like he would rather puncture it than risk losing the match. Faced with this scenario, there is an opposition that has historically struggled uniting and standing up ...

Euronews a interrogé K...

When, in January, the EU Commission appointed German Christian Democrat MEP Markus Pieper for a new position as a small business envoy, it sparked an outcry. The reason: Markus Pieper scored worse than other candidates for the plum position with almost 19.000 euros per month. The recruitment drew accusations of cronyism, as Pieper belongs to the same political party as Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Four fellow Commissioners protested in writing, and the European Parliament in a landslide vote asked von der Leyen to rescind the hire. This week, on what should have been his first da...

Lawmakers in Washington this week held the first congressional hearing on the Change Healthcare cyberattack, a breach that sent shock waves through the health care system as payments for care ground to a halt and left some providers in financial trouble. Republicans and Democrats alike zeroed in on how big health care conglomerations — like Change’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group — are leaving patients vulnerable. And nearly 1 in 4 adults who lost Medicaid coverage in the past year are now uninsured, accordi...

The Indian Supreme Court handed down a landmark decision on February 15th, 2024, striking down the controversial Electoral Bond scheme as unconstitutional. As the election dates draw near, political parties are bolstering their efforts to reach out to voters through various means.
