A greenhouse gas 24,000 times more powerful than carbon dioxide is being driven up by China’s growing electricity needs, according to a new study. CO2 is the number one greenhouse gas on our radar for good reason. A gas naturally present in the atmosphere but turbocharged by humans’ fossil fuel combustion, it is the single biggest contributor to the climate crisis. But an overload of carbon isn’t the only gas threatening Earth’s climate; international agreements cover a number of other gases including a man-made grouping of fluorinated (F) gases. Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) falls within this po...

The world could save $2 trillion (€1.85 trillion) by 2030 if it implements the necessary technology to decarbonise the energy sector, according to Schneider Electric. 32-year-old green energy entrepreneur Yetunde Fadeyi will never forget what inspired her to start a clean energy company in Nigeria. As a six-year-old, Fadeyi’s best friend, Fatima, was killed by carbon monoxide poisoning in her Lagos home, along with her father and pregnant mother. “She often came over for sleepovers. But that day she didn’t,” says Fadeyi. “It was the time that they were stealing people’s generators, so they kept [the generator] in an enclosed area and by the time it was morning they were dead.” Petrol-powered generators like the one Fatima’s family had are valuable assets be...

Slovakia stopped production at its last coal-fired power plant this week. Its electricity will now come almost entirely from nuclear and renewable sources. The Vojany power station, located in the Michalovce district in eastern Slovakia, opened in 1966. Slovenské elektrárne, the company that owns the plant, announced that all of the electricity generated in the Eastern European country will be free of direct CO2 as of June 2024. Slovakia originally slated its coal phaseout for 2030 but has now expedited this to mid-2024, when it will join Belgium, Austria, Sweden and Portugal as a coal-free co...

The wind gusting across north German farm country brings much to the village of Sprakebuell: fog and rain from the sea, the occasional migrating stork, and the faint smell of manure in the newly fertilised fields. And perhaps best of all, money - from selling the electricity generated by the wind turbines studding the flat green fields stretching out to the North Sea. A slice of the cash goes to the villagers themselves, with the local buy-in making this windy farming enclave near the border with Denmark a showcase for ways to push ahead with renewable energy projects. It's not easy when headw...

Motorsport is a huge business, with F1 alone being worth in excess of €2 billion a year. However, it’s often criticised for being environmentally unfriendly, with even the glamour surrounding it not compensating for that fact. Come 2024, though, there is an alternative taking the world of luxury sports by storm. Enter the E1 Series - the world’s first ever all-electric race boat championship. After a huge launch last month amid much fanfare in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, it’s generated enormous interest worldwide and now it's set to add excitement on Europe's waterways, too, as the season continues....

Deep in the Arizona desert, a Danish company is building a massive solar farm that includes batteries that charge when the sun is shining and supply energy back to the electric grid when it's not. “Solar farms only produce when the sun shines, and the turbines only produce when the wind blows,” said Ørsted CEO Mads Nipper. “For us to maximise the availability of the green power, 24-7, we have to store some of it too.” Back in Arizona, Ørsted’s Eleven Mile Solar Center covers 2,000 acres in rural Pinal County. It has 857,000 solar panels and more than 2,000 cubes that look like large shipping c...
