New York (AFP) - A new French cafe is hoping to break into New York's notoriously competitive food scene while also offering opportunity to people with mental and cognitive disabilities. Cafe Joyeux is an "inclusive" chain of restaurants staffed by workers with autism and Down syndrome that has made a mark in France and other European countries and is now targeting the Big Apple. The company's newest branch, Cafe Joyeux Lexington, has picked a cheery corner in the bustling Midtown business district for the company's American debut. Officially inaugurated on Thursday in parallel with World Dow...

Washington (AFP) - Hiring in the United States was robust in February although unemployment crept up, government data showed Friday, a potentially encouraging sign for policymakers hoping to cool the economy without tipping it into a downturn. Officials have been walking a fine line trying to bring down inflation by raising interest rates without causing a major blow to the economy. While analysts believed the United States could enter a recession last year, the economy has defied expectations and a surprisingly resilient labor market has helped to support growth. "The great American comeback ...

The gender pay gap is still very much evident in Europe. Several indicators exhibit the inequality between women and men in many arenas, but economic life is one of the key areas affecting women the most. Despite some improvements in Europe, women still suffer from gender gaps when it comes to wages, labour force participation, employment and hierarchical positions in the workplace. On International Women’s Day (March 8), an annual initiative promoted by the United Nations to raise awareness of gender-related issues, Euronews Next crunches the data in these main indicators to give a fuller pic...

Washington (AFP) - Job gains in the US private sector picked up in February, payroll firm ADP said Wednesday, a sign that could give the Federal Reserve some pause as it mulls the timing of interest rate cuts. Private sector employment grew by 140,000 jobs last month, less than analysts expected although up from a revised 111,000 figure in January. "The labor market is dynamic, but doesn't tip the scales in terms of a Fed rate decision this year," said ADP chief economist Nela Richardson in a statement. She added that job gains remained "solid" and while salary increases were cooling, they are...

Hungary's unemployment rate jumped to 4.6% from November to January, up from 4% in the same period the previous year. The increase means that the number of people out of work aged 15-74 has gone up by 30,000 to 226,000, according to new statistics released by Hungary's central statistics office on Friday. The office said that of the total number of unemployed people in Hungary, 121,500 were men, with their unemployment rate rising to 4.7%. Some 104,300 women were also out of work, with their rate up to 4.5%. The statistics mark a steady but consistent rise in unemployment since mid-2022, as Hu...

A draft EU law determining when workers on platforms like Uber and Deliveroo should be treated as employees failed to win EU member states' support in a key meeting on Friday. The Platform Work Directive would classify workers on "gig-economy" apps as employees in cases where platforms control factors such as how much money workers are paid or their working hours, or supervise their performance electronically. What was meant to be a final draft of the law on Friday failed to win sufficient support among representatives of the European Union's 27 member states. The draft was provisionally agree...

Economic output remained unchanged in the eurozone in the final three months of 2023, and slightly expanded in the EU, confirming the first estimates from Eurostat. The eurozone economy’s stagnation follows a 0.1% contraction in the previous quarter, meaning that the bloc has just avoided a recession, essentially avoiding two consecutive quarters of decline in gross domestic product (GDP). The economy has not shown any sign of life over the last year, contracting or growing by a slight 0.1% since the beginning of 2023. In a yearly comparison, the numbers also suggest a standstill economy, the ...

Washington (AFP) - The US labor market smashed expectations last month in a surprise hiring pick-up, government data showed Friday, with a resilient jobs market likely good news for President Joe Biden in election year. The world's biggest economy added 353,000 jobs in January, after December's figure was significantly revised upwards to 333,000, said the Department of Labor. The unemployment rate held steady at 3.7 percent for a third straight month -- hovering under 4.0 percent for two years now -- even though analysts cautioned the report also contained signs of weakness. "It's great news f...
