On several mornings this spring, Brussels' European Quarter woke up to the sound of giant tractors honking loudly, with tonnes of soil and manure dumped around street corners, and bonfires blocking important crossroads. It wasn't exactly the cosy atmosphere that European bureaucrats are used to. This spectacular roadshow was set up by farmers representing small and big farms across Europe to highlight their everyday struggles to make a decent living from their almost 24/7 work shifts to produce our food. Unfortunately, in no time, their legitimate demands for fair incomes got heavily instrumen...

Three political groups threaten to derail an attempt to fast-track a modification of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) designed to mollify protesting farmers during the last voting plenary of the current legislative term on 25 April. The CAP simplification package proposed by the Commission in late February aims to cut red tape for farmers, by reducing green conditions required to receive CAP funding and providing exemptions from checks for farms under 10 hectares – which will affect 65% of CAP beneficiaries. This week (15 April) the European Parliament’s agriculture committee (AGRI) opted ...

It’s not a secret that farmers and the agricultural sector are facing a huge number of overlapping environmental crises right now. Temperature change, increasingly extreme weather events, and accelerating natural disasters threaten crop yield, soil health, the length of growing seasons, and general productivity. These changes necessarily have profound economic effects on individual farmers and the industry at large, and that reality is only compounded by the needs of a growing global population that must be fed. Farms and farming are an integral part of a far-reaching climate solution, but the...

Champions of organic farming have long portrayed it as friendlier to humans and the earth. But a new study in a California county found a surprising effect as their acreage grew: nearby conventional farms applied more pesticides, likely to stay on top of an increased insect threat to their crops, the researchers said. Ashley Larsen, lead author of the study in this week's journal Science, said understanding what's happening could be important to keeping organic and conventional farmers from hurting each other's operations. “We expect an increase in organic in the future. How do we make sure th...

Almost half of the respondents in an Ipsos survey of 26,000 European voters conducted for Euronews considered the EU’s actions to impact negatively on the protection of European agriculture and the bloc’s food independence. Both aspects take centre stage in the EU’s farming subsidies programme, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), which is also one of the bloc’s biggest cash envelopes. The poll outcome may be viewed as a substantial failure of the bloc’s key agricultural policy, with EU lawmakers failing to capitalise on funding specifically earmarked for agriculture – which accounts for one-...

Farmers protests in Brussels turned violent this week as EU agricultural ministers met to try and quell the ongoing crisis. Months of rallies have taken place across Europe from Finland to Greece, Poland and Ireland. Demonstrations again came to a head in Brusselsthis week when farmers threw beets, sprayed police with manure and set hay alight close to the European Union headquarters. Police used tear gas and water cannons to keep the violence at bay. Farmers set the entryway to a subway station alight and one person was arrested for throwing Molotov cocktails at security personnel. Over half ...

Standing in a field of apple trees in Catalonia, fruit and cereal farmer Ramón Falguera looks worried. Last year, fruit harvests dropped by around a third and wheat by half due to a lack of rain and restrictions on water use in this area of northeast Spain. The water canal used for irrigating the farmland, which stems from rivers born in the Pyrenees mountains, only opened for a month last spring for the first time since it was built 160 years ago. The drought is thought to be the worst in 200 years, hitting large swathes of the region following more than three years of low rainfall and record...

Agriculture ministers from the 27 member states gathering this week in Brussels agreed a simplification package proposed by the Commission in late February to ease red tape surrounding eligibility for EU farming subsidies. The measures reduce green conditions required to receive Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) funding, also providing exemptions from checks for farms under 10 hectares – which will affect 65% of CAP beneficiaries. “Today's discussions show that the work on the request from the agricultural sector has made good progress, but we haven't finished,” Belgium’s agriculture minister D...

The concessions made to farmers haven't helped to calm the anger of the demonstrators who gathered again in Brussels on Tuesday, just a few metres from where the EU agriculture ministers were meeting. Unlike the February rallies, where several hundred tractors were gathered, only a few turned up this time around. The reasons for their protests remain largely the same. Brussels has taken note of the farmers' demands, including several meetings with European politicians, such as the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and several agricultural ministers. "We have listened ...

Romania is now using artificial intelligence (AI) to help farmers access grants and funding from European bodies. The government’s Rural Investing Finance Authority (AFIR) said in a press release last week that they are partnering with UiPath, a Romanian business automation and AI software, to streamline the submission process for them. The move is supposed to save farmers time in processing financial files and lower costs for obtaining and submitting the right approvals and authorisations for their products. It will also give farmers easier access to funding from the European Agricultural Fun...
