An official from the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has begun his trial for using a banned Nazi slogan. AfD regional branch manager Björn Höcke has been accused of using a banned Nazi slogan twice in the run- up to a regional election in which he is running to become the state governor of the eastern state of Thuringia. He is accused of ending a speech in Merseburg in May 2021 with the words "Alles für Deutschland", or "Everything for Germany". The phrase is banned in Germany as it was once a motto of the Sturmabteilung, the original paramilitary wing of the Nazi party that play...

The highest court in Brussels has allowed of a gathering of far-right European nationalist politicians to continue for a second day, the conference's organisers say, after police tried to shut it down on Tuesday. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, French far-right candidate Eric Zemmour, and former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki were scheduled to speak at the two-day National Conservatism (NatCon) conference in Brussels, which had struggled to find a venue in the Belgian capital willing to host it. The support for far-right and conservative parties appears unrestrained in countries once known as the Inner Six – Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands – which first established the European Communities in the 1950s. This was the most striking figure to emerge from Euronews’ unprecedented survey based on 26,000 interviews (10,000 of these from the Inner Six countries) in countries representing 96% of the bloc’s population. As the EU's beating heart, interest in what’s happening in the Inner Six has always been considered vital to check the pulse of the Union. But a ...

Following the news has become a painful experience for progressives in Europe. Ukraine is stuttering in its war with Russia. Donald Trump appears to be on his way back to the White House. And anti-European parties are performing well in opinion polls ahead of this year’s European Parliament elections — which are now just 80 days away. European citizens cannot do much to influence the result of the presidential election in the US, or developments on the battlefield in Ukraine. Still, June’s elections across the EU-27 offer a rare opportunity for them to have an impact. The main question is whet...

Polls have officially opened on Sunday in Portugal’s general election with mainstream moderates trying to keep a populist party at bay. The election, with 10.8 million registered voters, is set against a backdrop of corruption and economic hardship that have eroded faith in moderate mainstream parties and could push a significant number of voters into the arms of a radical right populist party. A slew of recent corruption scandals has tarnished the two parties that have alternated in power for decades — the centre-left Socialist Party and the centre-right Social Democratic Party, which is runn...

There was confidence in the air as the European People’s Party kicked off its pre-election campaign in Bucharest on Thursday. The group is projected to scoop up almost a quarter of the vote to win June’s ballot, and remain the European Parliament’s biggest faction. But with its vote share stagnating as the far right surges - and with its fellow mainstream parties in demise - questions are mounting over whether the EPP will flirt with populist partners it previously considered off-limits. Especially as its member parties have already done so in some EU capitals. Its lead candidate Ursula von de...

On paper, the two-day meeting over the weekend was designed to extol the chief achievements of social democracy over the past five years, parade a succession of high-profile leaders and designate a lead candidate for the continent-wide polls. The lucky one was Nicolas Schmit, a relatively unknown figure who led the internal race uncontested. His credentials as European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights were convincing enough to earn him an election by acclamation. "Comrades, we have a project of hope, of progress, of justice and shared prosperity. I'm ready to lead our political family t...

A German far-right extremist already serving a life sentence following an attempt to attack a synagogue in 2019 was convicted on Tuesday of hostage-taking in the course of a jailbreak attempt. Stephan Balliet, 32, was sentenced to seven years in prison, German news agency dpa reported. He also was ordered to make payments to several people.
