The German postal service Deutsche Post has discontinued its domestic mail flights after more than 62 years. In the early hours of Thursday, the last aircraft carrying domestic mail took off from Berlin and flew to Stuttgart. Shortly before that, planes had taken off from Hanover, Munich and Stuttgart. The six planes were carrying only letters - a total of around 1.5 million items weighing 53 tons. This corresponds to around 3% of the volume of letters transported by Deutsche Post around the country every day. In future, the postal service will no longer use letter transport aircraft in order ...

Scientists in the UK have found evidence that microplastics are contaminating archaeological soil samples. The discovery has the potential to upend the way historical remains are preserved. Tiny particles of microplastics were discovered seven metres underground in samples dating from the first or early second century. They were first excavated in the 1980s. “This feels like an important moment, confirming what we should have expected: that what were previously thought to be pristine archaeological deposits, ripe for investigation, are in fact contaminated with plastics, and that this includes...

Ballads were all the rage, and we’re not talking about Stairway to Heaven. These were songs sung straight from the mouths of balladeers: musicians who went from place to place setting lyrics to music for the public’s listening pleasure. The system currently used to classify hurricane severity may no longer be sufficient as tropical storms intensify. Scientists are making the case that the Saffir-Simpson scale should be expanded to include a new Category 6 classification, Knewz.com has learned. In a study titled "The growing inadequacy of an open-ended Saffir–Simpson hurricane wind scale in a warming world," published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences last month, climate scientists noted that rising ocean temperatures are leading to stronger and more destructive hurricanes. Therefore, the open-ende...
