A German conservative opposition lawmaker is challenging the coalition government's plans to pass a major overhaul of C02 emissions targets through parliament on Friday, seeking an injunction to force a delay to the vote. Thomas Heilmann, a lawmaker with the centre-right Christian Democrats (CDU), is arguing that the legislative process has been rushed. He asked Germany's Constitutional Court on Wednesday to delay the scheduled vote. The Moscow clergyman Dmitry Safronov has been banned from holding services for the next three years, several Russian media reported on Wednesday, citing a decree by Moscow Patriarch Kirill. He is no longer allowed to give a blessing, wear a habit or priestly cross, they said. He was also dismissed as a deacon in the Church of the Assumption in Moscow. Instead, he is now to perform relief work for the priest there as a psalm singer in anothe...

New York (AFP) - After a tense overnight standoff, Columbia University officials and students appeared to agree to further talks Wednesday on clearing a pro-Palestinian protestor encampment that has paralyzed the New York campus. The more than 21 million pensioners in Germany will receive a substantial 4.57% pension increase beginning on July 1, after the German Cabinet approved the adjustment on Wednesday in Berlin. With this increase, pensions are set to rise faster than inflation in the country. The last time pensions rose faster than inflation was in 2000. The increase is larger than originally predicted, which Labour Minister Hubertus Heil credited to strong wage growth in Germany. In the autumn, estimates had predicted an increase of only 3.5%. In the past two years, the pension increase had lagged behind inflati...

Fund managers are meant to be focused on value creation, and paid to make decisions that financially benefit the firm they invest in and, by consequence, the fund they manage. Yet, recent research suggests that’s not always the case and that, in the United States at least, their decisions can actually be driven by political motivations. What’s more, these managers then look to hide that bias by engaging in “signal jamming” to avoid any potential backlash for breaching their fiduciary duties. Not all behaviour is as expectedThis conclusion is based on an analysis of the proxy voting behaviour o...

Washington (AFP) - The US Supreme Court was set to hear a crucial case Wednesday weighing whether Idaho's near-total ban on abortion violates federal law requiring hospitals to stabilize patients needing emergency care. It comes nearly two years after the conservative-majority bench overturned the national right to terminate a pregnancy, making reproductive rights a pivotal issue that could shape the outcome of the November presidential election. The ruling in the Idaho case could have sweeping consequences for hospitals across the country. Dozens of women's rights activists gathered in front ...
