Employees of the Richmond Wildlife Center in Virginia are doing their best to act like mother foxes as they feed and care for an orphaned kit that found her way into their care. In a bid to make this as natural as possible, they had to get a little bit creative. Executive director Melissa Stanley took the unorthodox step of donning a hyper realistic fox mask while feeding the tiny kit from a syringe. The kit sits on top of a large stuffed animal fox that is supposed to look like her mother, Stanley said. How can abandoned animals be returned to the wild? This helps to minimise human sounds and ...

Five people who had been trapped deep inside a flooded cave in Slovenia for more than two days because of high water levels were rescued on Monday. The hours-long rescue operation by a team of six divers became possible when water levels inside the Krizna Cama cave receded. “It is a day of happiness, it's a day of life," said Sandi Curk of the Slovenian civil protection service. Three tourists and two guides got stuck in the eight-kilometre cave system after heavy rainfall resulted in the subterranean waters rising fast. They were found in a dry area about two kilometres inside the cave, with ...

Rescuers in western Japan were scrambling to search for survivors believed to be trapped under collapsed buildings on Wednesday, as freezing temperatures and heavy rain are expected to strike the same area which was devastated by a powerful earthquake the day before. A 7.6-magnitude quake hit the Ishikawa prefecture - on the island of Honshu and on the opposite coast from the capital Tokyo - on Monday, triggering tsunami waves that were more than a metre high, starting a fire and collapsing buildings. Aftershocks were felt in Ishikawa prefecture and nearby areas two days after the initial quak...

Gaviota (United States) (AFP) - Denise Christ regularly comes across injured wildlife in her work rescuing beached or stranded marine mammals along the California coast. But she's been shocked by the hundreds of sea lions and dolphins found on the shore in recent weeks, dead or dying from neurotoxin poisoning. "Heartbreaking, to say the least," said Christ, the Ventura County stranding coordinator for the Channel Islands Marine and Wildlife Institute (CIMWI). The animals were sickened by domoic acid, a neurotoxin produced by algae that are a food source for fish, which are then eaten by sea li...

Los Angeles (AFP) - After their Oscar-winning movie "Free Solo," about a daredevil rock climber, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin found an even more remarkable true story for their next film -- the rescue of a boys' soccer team from a Thai cave in 2018. The husband-and-wife team had watched transfixed with the rest of the world as amateur divers, Navy SEALS and hundreds of volunteers pulled off a seemingly impossible rescue through miles of dark, perilous, flooded caves. Once the 12 boys and their coach had been plucked miraculously from their subterranean prison, the documentary maker...
