France’s Culture Minister Rachida Dati has suggested closing some public art schools that are “in a situation of crisis.” “We need to put an end to these shoestring policies, because ultimately it doesn’t solve the foundational problem, and it means public funds very poorly spent,” she said in a speech before the National Assembly on Tuesday. “I want high-performing schools, which have the same chances of success, and the same openness to all. If we must shut down certain schools, because today they no longer have the means to offer a quality environment, perhaps that will be the case.” France...

Choosing to homeschool my son was not an easy decision. He’s only seven, but will I really be able to give him the education he needs? Will he miss out on essential life skills if he doesn’t learn how to navigate crowds of kids in the playground, or overcome stage fright during his first school play? These are all very real questions that weighed on my mind for months as I struggled with the decision. But my son’s neurodiversity meant that most playtimes were being spent standing alone by the fence. He felt bullied and misunderstood. And his laser-sharp ability to focus on the often somewhat o...

The public high school of Antonio Meucci in Carpi looks much like any other in Europe: a hub of students eagerly awaiting lunch breaks, professors navigating peaks of motivation and resignation, while janitors run the halls. But tucked away in a distant corner of the schoolyard, a mysterious fenced structure emerges from the trees. Accessible only to specialised technicians, a panel on the structure hints at its purpose: H2 Hydrogen. This building contains the first green-hydrogen-powered boiler to heat an EU educational site, and it has zero emissions potential. So, how does a green hydrogen ...

Smartphones and tablets will be banned in Italian classrooms - even for teaching purposes - under new guidelines in Italy. “The use of smartphones and tablets can often create tension between students and teachers, sometimes also leading to acts of aggression against school staff,” said Italy's education minister Giuseppe Valditara. The ban will include students from kindergarten, primary and lower secondary schools. It extends an existing ban on the non-academic use of smart devices introduced in Italy in 2007, though it has not always been enforced. Last year, the UN's educational, cultural ...

A Michigan jury convicted a school shooter’s mother of involuntary manslaughter on Tuesday in the killings of four students in 2021, making her the first parent in the US to be held responsible for a child carrying out a mass shooting. Prosecutors say Jennifer Crumbley had a duty under state law to prevent her son, who was 15 at the time, from harming others. She was accused of failing to secure a gun and ammunition at home and failing to get help to support Ethan Crumbley’s mental health. The four guilty verdicts – one for each student slain at Oxford High School – were returned after roughly...

Every year of education can reduce your mortality risk by nearly 2 per cent, a new study has found. Not having any education, meanwhile, is as bad for your health as drinking too much alcohol or smoking 10 cigarettes a year for 10 years. That’s according to a meta-analysis that aimed to quantify the relationship between education and mortality. The review included 603 studies from across the globe. The findings were published in the scientific journal The Lancet Public Health00306-7/fulltext#seccestitle10) this week. “Education is important in its own right, not just for its benefits on health...

Gen Z English learners are getting bare gassed about flexing TikTok slang in class, according to a new study from international English language exam board Trinity College London. A survey of 505 English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers in the UK, who work with Gen Z students aged 12 through mid-20s, found that 71% of overseas students want teachers to explain English slang terms they’ve seen on social media or TV. Some of the most-requested terms include: ”Beef”, an argument (and also an Emmy-winning miniseries about the ultimate argument)”NPC”, a non-playable character in video games, or...

Houston (AFP) - A damning Justice Department report on Thursday cited "critical failures" by Texas law enforcement who waited until 21 people had been killed by a mass shooter at a school before finally intervening. Nineteen young children and two teachers were killed when a teenage gunman went on a rampage at Uvalde's Robb Elementary School in May 2022 in America's worst school shooting in a decade. Police eventually shot and killed the attacker. Investigators "identified several critical failures," the report said, and "the most significant failure was that the responding officers should hav...

Starting from the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year, a British Sign Language (BSL) class will be available to GCSE students (aged 15-16). The two-year BSL curriculum will include at least 750 signs and will be inclusive to students without any prior knowledge of the language. By the end of the course, successful students should be able to communicate effectively in BSL. The course will also teach students the history of BSL, the significance of sign languages and how the language itself was formed. Including BSL into the English GCSE curriculum is a huge boost to campaigners trying to gro...
