CHICAGO — Four girls younger than 6 whom neighbors described as “happy kids” died in a residential blaze Wednesday morning in suburban Des Plaines that also killed a 25-year-old woman, fire officials said. The fire started about 10:15 a.m. The dead include four girls, all of whom share the same last name, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The 25-year-old woman, of the same address as the girls, also died. • Lawyers advise Ethiopian Airlines against ‘financially disastrous’ settlement offer by Boeing over 737 Max crash

American attorneys for Ethiopian Airlines, which lost 157 passengers and crew in the second fatal crash of a Boeing 737 Max in early 2019, have advised the carrier not to accept a settlement Boeing has offered but instead to sue the manufacturer for punitive damages in the U.S. In an urgently worded letter sent Sunday, the Chicago-based attorneys warned Ethiopian CEO Tewolde GebreMariam that the offer falls “grossly short” of what the airline could win before a U.S. jury — particularly since Boeing recently accepted responsibility for criminal fraud during the plane’s certification by regulato...

  • Midwest suffered $11 billion in damage from last summer’s derecho

CHICAGO — The summer derecho that rattled windows and ripped down trees across the Midwest caused an estimated $11 billion in damage, becoming the costliest storm event to occur in less than 24 hours in at least four decades. That’s according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which this month released its annual report detailing the billion-dollar-plus weather and climate disasters to strike the United States. A record-breaking 22 disasters caused $95 billion in damage in 2020. Last year was the sixth in a row to have 10 or more separate billion-dollar disaster events, sa...

  • Biden inaugural rehearsal evacuated amid fire near US Capitol

The U.S. Capitol was briefly locked down Monday after a fire broke out a few blocks away in the middle of a rehearsal for President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, putting security precautions through an early stress test in the wake of this month’s bloody pro-Trump attack on the building. Participants, including members of a military band practicing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” were quickly whisked away by Capitol Police officers and Secret Service agents after a thick plume of black smoke shot up in the air about five blocks away around 10:30 a.m. local time. “All buildings within the Capitol...

  • Commentary: How Biden can rebuild trust in our elections

Sifting through the figurative rubble from the Jan. 6 siege on the U.S. Capitol, I recovered a valuable nugget — more on that in a moment — that was overshadowed by the tone-deaf charade President Donald Trump’s congressional toadies perpetrated after the riot. Sen. Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy and their craven posse of Republican sycophants proselytized the same conspiracy theories that had emboldened violent marauders to shake the foundations of the building and our democracy. But with no Senate trial expected before Wednesday's inauguration, it’s not clea...

  • Biden inaugural rehearsal evacuated amid fire near US Capitol

Participants at a rehearsal for President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration were evacuated from the West Front of the U.S. Capitol on Monday after a fire broke out near the building, according to officials. With tensions still high in the wake of the Jan. 6 pro-Trump attack on the Capitol, security officers rapidly whisked away the participants, including members of a military band, as a plume of smoke was seen shooting up in the air a few blocks away around 10:30 a.m. local time. But the blaze apparently wasn’t connected to the inaugural preparations, and the city's fire department said no injur...

  • Wildfire danger in January? In ultra-dry California, PG&E says safety blackout is coming

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — At the height of what should be California's rainy season, PG&E Corp. is warning it might need to shut off power to thousands of customers to reduce the risk of a wildfire. Pacific Gas and Electric Co. said it could impose a "public safety power shutoff" Monday night in portions of Calaveras, Fresno, Kern, Madera, Mariposa, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Tulare and Tuolumne counties. "Forecasts show high fire-risk conditions arriving Monday evening in the southern portion of PG&E's service area, with high winds expected to subside by Wednesday morning. Before any restorat...

  • Self-driving vehicles allowed to skip some crash safety standards under new rule

WASHINGTON — The Trump Administration issued final rules Thursday that will allow self-driving vehicle manufacturers to skip certain federal crash safety requirements in vehicles that aren't designed to carry people. It marks the first major update to existing federal safety standards to accommodate innovations in driverless technology. While no fully autonomous vehicles are for sale for consumers now, industry experts expect that market share for self-driving cars and trucks will expand in the coming decade. The rule — months in the making — also allows manufacturers more leeway to design sel...

  • Retired Pa. firefighter accused of injuring officers and man who paraded Confederate flag in Capitol are charged

PHILADELPHIA — A recently retired Pennsylvania firefighter accused of lobbing a fire extinguisher at police and father-and-son duo from Delaware caught on camera smashing windows and parading a Confederate Flag through the Capitol surrendered to federal authorities Thursday to face charges tied to the Jan. 6 insurrectionist riot in Washington, D.C. Prosecutors said Robert Sanford, a 26-year veteran of the Chester Fire Department who left the force in February, injured three people when he tossed the extinguisher at the head of an officer as part of a mob that broke through barricades on the Ca...

  • Kristian Winfield: For super team Nets, anything shy of Finals is a disaster

NEW YORK — When LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh joined forces in Miami, it was Finals or bust, and the Heat did not bust. When Kevin Durant joined Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green on the Warriors, Golden State became an instant dynasty. When Dennis Rodman joined Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, the Bulls won another three NBA titles. The new-look Nets must be judged by the same super team standard. Nets general manager Sean Marks won’t say it, so I will. It will be both a disappointment and a failure if these super Nets do not win an NBA championship, let alone make t...
