The House voted 422-3 to pass the Emmett Till Antilynching Act, which would make lynching a federal hate crime. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Illinois). “By passing my Emmett Till Antilynching Act, the House has sent a resounding message that our nation is finally reckoning with one of the darkest and most horrific periods of our history and that we are morally and legally committed to changing course,” Rush said. The bill is named in honor of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black boy who was kidnapped and lynched in Mississippi in 1955 for allegedly whistling and making advances at ...

President Joe Biden has commented on the guilty verdicts in Ahmaud Arbery‘s case, saying he felt the convictions are “not enough” and that more must be done to unify the country. “While the guilty verdicts reflect our justice system doing its job, that alone is not enough. Instead, we must recommit ourselves to building a future of unity and shared strength, where no one fears violence because of the color of their skin,” Biden said. Biden said his administration “will continue to do the hard work to ensure that equal justice under law is not just a phrase emblazoned in stone above the Supreme...

Kyle Rittenhouse, the 18-year-old who fatally shot two men and wounded many others during a Black Lives Matter protest last year, has been acquitted. Rittenhouse attempted to excuse his actions by claiming he was acting in self-defense during the protest, which occurred in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. “So many people look at this case and they see what they want to see,” said Thomas Binger, the prosecutor in the trial. California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) commented on the verdict, claiming it shows “armed vigilantes” that “you can break the law, carry around weapons built for a military, sho...

2020 and 2021 have been brutal years for many places in the United States, but none quite as brutal as in Minneapolis, Minnesota. From the murder of George Floyd to months worth of protests, Minneapolis has been in a fraught state. Calls to defund the police have been made nationwide, but nowhere quite as fervently as the place where George Floyd, Daunte Wright, Philando Castile and other black men have died at the hands of the police. Question 2 on the Minnesota election ballot was on whether residents wanted the police department to be replaced with a public safety system. The push to ‘defun...

The people shot and killed by Kyle Rittenhouse in Kenosha, Wisconsin, last August cannot be referred to as “victims” during his trial a judge ruled on Monday. The judge also decided that the people he shot will be allowed to be called “arsonists” or “looters.” “The word ‘victim’ is a loaded, loaded word. And I think ‘alleged victim’ is a cousin to it,” said Judge Bruce Schroeder on Monday. “Let the evidence show what the evidence shows. And if the evidence shows that any or more than one of these people were engaged in arson, rioting or looting – then I’m not going to tell the defense they can...
