Washington (AFP) - As colder weather sets in, Covid rates are once more rising across the Northern Hemisphere, with several new variants on the scene. Here's what you need to know. Covid versus seasonal nasties? The Covid pandemic extracted a terrible toll, with nearly seven million deaths worldwide. But thanks to vaccines, prior immunity and better treatments, the virus is now far more manageable. In the United States, excess deaths -- the total number of people dying for any given cause -- has been normal since spring. "If you asked me to choose between getting flu and Covid, I would pick...

Washington (AFP) - When Joe Biden was criticized this week for failing to mask up after his wife caught Covid, he didn't just put a brave face on it. Rather, the 80-year-old US president did it again -- and then flaunted the fact that he was breaking the guidance. And by laughing it off the Democrat, who is running for re-election in 2024, showed he was in touch with Americans who are fed up with the pandemic. Biden first raised eyebrows on Tuesday by removing his mask while draping the Medal of Honor around the neck of an octogenarian Vietnam War veteran at the White House. Just hours earlier...

Washington (AFP) - After a three-and-a-half year pandemic-era pause, US federal student loans start accumulating interest again from Friday, with repayments set to cut the monthly take-home pay of millions of Americans by hundreds, and in some cases thousands, of dollars. Joe Biden campaigned for president on a pledge to forgive at least $10,000 in student loan debt for millions of Americans, and unveiled a $400 billion program to do just that after taking office. But on June 30, the US Supreme Court ruled that his administration had overstepped its authority, and struck down the student loan...

Washington (AFP) - The United States lost more than $200 billion to fraud from two schemes designed to help small businesses through the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a US government watchdog report. "We identified multiple schemes used by fraudsters to steal from the American taxpayer and exploit programs meant to help those in need," the Small Business Administration's (SBA) Office of Inspector General (OIG) said in a new report. The potentially fraudulent loans were disbursed through two Covid-19 programs, the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) and the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP)...

Washington (AFP) - The White House said Monday that the national and public health emergencies declared just as the Covid-19 pandemic took grip three years ago will officially end May 11. The end to both federal emergency declarations, which took effect in January 2020 under then-president Donald Trump, will see funds used to subsidize Covid medicines, medical insurance and other types of government aid related to the pandemic come to an end. In practice, part of these government assistance programs has already dried up due to opposition from Congress. The remaining debate is largely political...

Washington (AFP) - Robert F. Kennedy Jr, son of the slain US presidential candidate, and other anti-vaccine activists have filed a lawsuit against several news organizations that have banded together to fight misinformation. The nearly 100-page complaint, filed this week in a US District Court in Texas, accuses the media outlets and social media companies of colluding to censor other online publishers with alternative Covid narratives. Besides Kennedy, the plaintiffs include an organization he founded, Children's Health Defense, right-wing news organizations that have promoted anti-vaccine th...

Washington (AFP) - US President Joe Biden's Covid symptoms "continue to improve" and he is tolerating treatment well, his White House physician said Saturday, two days after the 79-year-old tested positive for the virus. Biden, who is isolating at the White House, completed a second full day of Paxlovid on Friday night, his doctor Kevin O'Connor wrote in a memorandum to the White House press secretary. The US leader continues to experience a sore throat, runny nose, cough and body aches, but they are "less troublesome," O'Connor said. And his pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate and tempera...

Washington (AFP) - A small new study published Tuesday by scientists at the US National Institutes of Health suggests that the immune response triggered by coronavirus infections damages the brain's blood vessels and could be responsible for long Covid symptoms. The paper, published in the journal Brain, was based on brain autopsies from nine people who died suddenly after contracting the virus. Rather than detecting evidence of Covid in the brain, the team found it was the people's own antibodies that attacked the cells lining the brain's blood vessels, causing inflammation and damage. This ...

Washington (AFP) - Coronavirus survivors have twice the risk of developing dangerous blood clots that travel to their lungs compared to people who weren't infected, as well double the chance of respiratory symptoms, a large new study said Tuesday. The research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that as many as one in five adults aged 18-64 years and one in four of those over 65 went on to experience health conditions that could be related to their bout of Covid -- a finding consistent with other research. Among all conditions, the risk of developing acute pulmonary embolis...

Washington (AFP) - US President Joe Biden warned nations attending Thursday's virtual global summit on Covid-19 that there was "still so much left to do" to quell the pandemic, as more than $3 billion in new funding was pledged. The veteran Democrat may however be at pains to spearhead ambitious plans to vaccinate the world and stop the spread of the coronavirus, as Congress has so far refused to authorize billions of dollars in funding. The United States crossed a grim milestone as the summit began, with the White House announcing that more than one million Americans have now died due to Covi...
