Death Valley is famously known as flat and dry, but two months after a turbulent storm, the desert teems with wildflowers and water. Hurricane Hilary, California’s first tropical storm in 84 years, dropped a year’s worth of rainfall in just one day. Flooded roads and destroyed trails, which received over two inches of rain, forced Death Valley to shut down on August 21. It reopened on October 15 to reveal that the national park now hosts a temporary lake, 5,575 feet above Dante’s View, visible from the water’s edge. While it hasn’t been measured yet, rangers estimate the water to be about two ...

Climate activist Greta Thunberg was found guilty of disobeying a police order and will be fined. Thunberg will have to pay a total of 4,500 Swedish crowns ($414) for failing to leave a July 24 climate protest when police told her to do so. “There are no laws to protect us in the long-term from the greed that tries to drag us over the cliff. We young people do not want to see our future taken away from us,” she said in a news conference in response to the verdict. During the protest, Thunberg and activists from Reclaim the Future blocked a road where oil trucks were driving to the Malmo, Sweden...

Several protesters were arrested Thursday night in the U.S. Open. They delayed the match between Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova at 8:05 p.m. after shouting about climate change, interrupting the match. The protesters were wearing shirts that read “End Fossil Fuels.” Three of the four activists were immediately removed from the stadium, while the fourth one glued his bare feet to the ground. The police and medical professionals were called in to remove him from the stadium safely. All four protesters were then taken into custody by the New York Police Department. Two protesters have already b...

An Instagram post made by Martha Stewart has received backlash from fans of the businesswoman and TV personality. Commemorating the end of the Zodiac Cruise, an offshoot of the Swan Hellenic, a British cruise line, Stewart talked about how the cruise “captured a small iceberg for our cocktails tonight” while off the east coast of Greenland. Stewart’s post was flooded with plenty of negative responses, accusing her of ignorance of current environmental problems, as well as being elitist and “tone-deaf” regarding climate change. Greenland is currently the fastest-growing area of the world, with ...

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was fined $240 for refusing police orders to leave a protest at an oil terminal in southern Sweden in June. While protesting, Thunberg and other demonstrators were allegedly blocking traffic from accessing the facility, resulting in her arrest. She appeared at Malmo District Court and admitted to refusing to comply with police orders. However, she denied that her actions warranted criminal charges. “My actions are justifiable,” she said in court. “I believe that we are in an emergency that threatens life, health and property. Countless people and communi...

The Mississippi River is experiencing an extreme drought this year, and water levels have gotten low that barges are unable to pass through. The river is a key shipping channel for the U.S. and obviously very ecologically important, too. Water levels are nearly 11 feet below normal in some areas. IN MEMORIAM 2022: 100 GREAT CELEBRITIES WHO DIED THIS YEAR! The Coast Guard has said in a statement that eight barges in the past months have run aground in the river, and they’ve had to dredge canals and lighten shipping loads to get them through. Portions of the river have dried so much that areas w...

As the United Kingdom and areas of the U.S. go through an unprecedented summer heat wave, some users online have pointed to the media discussion around increasing dangers due to climate change and seen that it parallels a recent film’s satire that some thought was too heavy-handed. The film Don’t Look Up came to Netflix last year and featured a team of scientists trying to warn an uninterested world of a looming meteorite crash. Its director Adam McKay has said that the film is an allegory for the world’s response to climate change, and the clip shows how eerily insightful the film really was....

The largest water reservoir in the country, Lake Mead, is dangerously close to what officials call “dead pool” status as its water levels lower due to drought conditions in the area. Lake Mead provides power to the country by flowing through the Hoover Dam and also provides drinking water to Nevada, Arizona, California, and parts of Mexico. The lake’s level was recorded at 1,043.82 feet as of Thursday, and “dead pool” status would occur at 895 feet. A dead pool means that the water level would be too low to flow through a dam, and it would certainly be extremely bad news if that level is reach...

Less than a week after a body was found at Lake Mead, the country’s largest reservoir, more remains were found over the weekend. On Saturday, a call was made to the National Park Service rangers, which reported the spotting of a second set of human remains found in Callville Bay. The Clark County Medical Examiner claimed that there is “no further information is available at this time” regarding the cause of death or the victim’s identity. The first body was discovered on May 1 and determined to be a murder victim who died from a gunshot wound based on the autopsy. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Po...

Climate activist Greta Thunberg testified virtually before Congress on Friday, otherwise known as Earth Day. She spoke to the House of Representatives about how Americans must act now to save the planet, advocating for ending fossil fuel subsidies, divesting from fossil fuels and ending new fossil fuel exploration. She presented her speech on the first day of the two-day Climate Summit hosted by President Joe Biden. Her testimony was both strong and heartbreaking. Thunberg said that her generation and the generations to come after her are the ones who will hold lawmakers accountable for their ...
