  • Latino leaders call out Trump disinformation campaign in Miami Spanish-language media

MIAMI —Latino leaders from more than 20 local advocacy groups have denounced the spread of misinformation in South Florida Spanish-language media, warning in an open letter that “hateful rhetoric can have deadly consequences.” Since a mob of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, resulting in the deaths of five people, including a Capitol Police officer, a number of popular Spanish-language AM radio stations and YouTube shows have amplified conspiracy theories about the riot, and disseminated unfounded allegations of voter fraud. In the days leading up to the Jan. 6 attack, a lis...

  • New reports describe other ways Trump tried to interfere in Ga. election

ATLANTA — A pair of new developments underscored President Donald Trump’s insistent attempts to overturn Georgia’s election results just as Democrats accelerate their push to impeach the Republican for inciting a mob to attack the U.S. Capitol. Weeks before Trump pressured Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger “find” enough votes to flip the election, it was revealed Saturday that he also called a Georgia elections investigator with a similar demand, prompting questions about possible obstruction of justice. Separately, White House officials urged U.S. Attorney BJay Pak to resign before the co...

  • Rubio waited until after Capitol attack to say politicians lied to Trump rioters

WASHINGTON — Florida Sen. Marco Rubio said Friday in a video that the people who stormed the U.S. Capitol were “lied to by politicians who were telling them that the vice president had the power to change the election results.” But in the days before the attack that appalled the world and resulted in five deaths, Rubio made no public effort to counter what he now calls a lie pushed by politicians he didn’t name. Nor would he talk when asked this week about a last-ditch attempt by his fellow Senate Republicans to overturn the election by blocking President-elect Joe Biden’s formal certification...

  • Michigan man arrested in connection with state Capitol bomb threat

LANSING, Mich. — Officials arrested a Charlotte, Michigan, man Thursday suspected of calling in a bomb threat to the state Capitol in Lansing. Michael Varrone, 48, could face charges Friday, the state Attorney General's Office said in a news release. The Michigan State Capitol was closed to lawmakers and staff for about two hours Thursday because of the threat. The Capitol was already closed to the public because of the coronavirus pandemic and because the Michigan Legislature is not in session. It remained closed to the public Thursday after the building was deemed safe and lawmakers and staf...

  • Michigan State Capitol closed Thursday due to unspecified threat

LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan State Capitol is closed Thursday due to an unspecified threat, a Michigan State Police spokesman confirmed. The closure comes one day after supporters of President Donald Trump rioted during a Wednesday rally near the U.S. Capitol protesting the presidential election results, forced their way inside the U.S. Capitol, and did considerable damage while delaying the counting of the electoral votes. One rioter was shot by police and died. Lt. Darren Green would not give details of the Lansing threat but said a news release will be issued. Sen. Curtis Hertel, D-East La...

  • Trump files another lawsuit seeking to overturn Georgia election

ATLANTA — President Donald Trump has filed another lawsuit seeking to overturn Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election in Georgia. In a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Atlanta on New Year’s Eve, the president asks the court to decertify the Georgia election before Congress votes Wednesday to confirm Biden’s victory. A hearing is set for Tuesday. The president’s complaint repeats allegations and arguments that have gone nowhere in other lawsuits, including claims that out-of-state, dead and other ineligible voters cast ballots in the November election. Georgia official...

  • Trump questions loyalty of Pence as GOP hardliners push to overturn election results

President Donald Trump is reportedly questioning the loyalty of Vice President Mike Pence as the commander-in-chief pushes ever more extreme measures to overturn his election loss. After another round of White House scheming with right-wing allies, Trump is focused on the vice president’s largely ceremonial role of presiding over a Jan. 6 session of Congress to seal the results of the vote, Axios reported Tuesday, citing White House aides. “Trump (views) Pence performing his constitutional duty — and validating the election result — as the ultimate betrayal,” Axios reported. The increasingly p...

  • Supreme Court rejects GOP congressman's last-minute effort to upend Pennsylvania's election results

PHILADELPHIA — The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a Republican congressman’s last-ditch effort to reverse the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in Pennsylvania, delivering what legal experts described as an ominous sign for the lingering legal challenges pushed by GOP allies of President Donald Trump. The justices issued their decision, without comment, in a terse, two-line order dismissing the matter raised by Rep. Mike Kelly, the Butler County Republican who had argued that millions of votes in the state had been unconstitutionally cast by mail. Unlike in a previou...

  • Republican Sen. Pat Toomey calls Trump's campaign to overturn Pennsylvania election 'completely unacceptable'

PHILADELPHIA — Sen. Pat Toomey said Tuesday that it’s “completely unacceptable” for President Donald Trump to pressure state lawmakers to overturn Pennsylvania’s election result, a rare rebuke from a Republican elected official as Trump continues his effort to subvert the will of the voters. “It’s completely unacceptable and it’s not going to work and the president should give up trying to get legislatures to overturn the results of the elections in their respective states,” Toomey, Pennsylvania’s most prominent elected Republican, said in a telephone interview. His comments came a day after i...

  • With time running out, GOP state lawmakers file new challenge to Pa.'s election results

PHILADELPHIA — With less than a day to go until the federal deadline for states to lock in their delegates for the Dec. 14 Electoral College vote, Pennsylvania Republicans bombarded state and federal courts Monday with a flurry of new legal filings grasping for last-minute traction in their thus far unsuccessful attempts to overturn the election’s results. A group of nine Pennsylvania legislators, led by Rep. Daryl Metcalfe of Butler, filed a new lawsuit before the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court calling the state’s administration of the 2020 election “so severely flawed it is impossible to ce...
