This pork and bean chili can be made in 20 minutes. The great thing I find about chili is that some like it hot, some like it mild, but almost everyone likes it. The degree of heat is up to you. Add more chili powder or fresh chili peppers to suit your taste. Serve the chili with bowls of sour cream and chopped fresh cilantro as garnishes along with rice. Helpful Hints: — Diced or chopped onion and green bell pepper found in the produce section of the market can be used instead of the frozen versions. Countdown: — Prepare ingredients. — Make the dish. • Maple syrup: It's not just for pancakes

You may as well admit it. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. You do it. We all do it. When you cook with maple syrup, and some of the syrup clings tenaciously to the measuring spoon or cup, you wipe it out with your finger and then lick the syrup off the finger. Don’t you? Of course you do. That’s the treat for the cook, a little something extra you deserve for doing the work. A present to yourself. And it is a well-known scientific fact that maple syrup licked off a finger has no calories. It is an inexplicable scientific phenomenon that is equally true of syrup licked off of spatulas. Whenever w...

Chicken soup won't cure COVID-19, but it might ease your sniffles. • Kit Kat Thins have arrived, a slimmer version of the classic candy bar

New year, new Kit Kat. The classic candy bar is showing off a svelte new figure for 2021, as Kit Kat Thins have made their way onto store shelves nationwide. Score the skinny new sweets in 3.4 and 7.2-ounce bags, for $2.39 and $3.89, respectively. The trim treat is thanks to the Thins having just two crispy chocolate-covered wafers instead of the usual three in standard bars. Kit Kat Thins are a permanent addition to the fam as opposed to recent fleeting sweets. Hershey, which runs the Kit Kat brand here in the U.S., has gotten more adventurous in the past year, rolling out limited-time flavor...

  • 'Do you need help?' Courageous waitress saves child from extreme abuse, cops say

As server Flavaine Carvalho waited on a family of four, she saw signs that something possibly wasn't quite right with the young boy. And she decided to ask a question that police said potentially saved his life: "Do you need help?" On New Year's Day, Timothy Wilson II, Kristen Swann, an unknown family member and their 11-year-old boy went to Mrs. Potato Restaurant in Orlando for a meal, an Orlando police release read. Carvalho, their waitress, thought that something was off when the boy didn't order anything. Carvalho also thought that the child had bruises on his face and arms, and she was de...

  • Will jars of salad sell at a doughnut shop? Farmer’s Fridge is trying that at Dunkin’

Farmer’s Fridge, best known for selling jars of fresh salads out of vending machines, is now hawking its healthy fare through an unlikely partner: doughnut titan Dunkin’. Chicago-based Farmer’s Fridge this week launched a pilot with three local Dunkin’ restaurants, which for the next three months will carry a selection of its salads, grain bowls and desserts on their menus. The partnership is Farmer’s Fridge’s first with a fast-casual restaurant and furthers its mission to “make fresh, healthy food as accessible as a candy bar,” said founder and CEO Luke Saunders. He hopes for a wider rollout....

  • Chicago's Magnificent Mile is ‘not invincible.’ Flagship mall faces huge challenges

Almost a half-century after opening, Water Tower Place, the once-bustling retail mall at the north end of Chicago's Magnificent Mile, remains shiny marble on the outside, but inside it’s losing some of its sparkle. Macy’s, which anchors the south end of the building, announced plans last week to close in a few months, leaving behind a more than 300,000-square-foot hole. In June, restaurant group Lettuce Entertain You closed Foodlife, credited by some as Chicago’s first food hall, and Mity Nice Bar & Grill. Both had been there for 27 years. Another Water Tower retailer, Gap, which has been clos...

  • Cocktails to go help restaurants stay afloat

Worried that the four Virginia restaurants she runs were headed for disaster during the pandemic, Sarah White branched out. The neighborhood restaurants, which serve casual-style foods such as burgers and sandwiches, started providing curbside pickup. One of the owners applied for and got funding from the federal Paycheck Protection Program. And when Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam in April allowed restaurants to offer cocktails to-go, White decided to give it a try. “At first, we were apprehensive about the logistics, but then we realized this was the new reality and opted to do it,” said White...
