Washington (AFP) - Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry joined a group of US senators on Thursday to announce new legislation that would provide tens of millions of dollars towards menopause research and education. "The shame has to be taken out of menopause. We have to talk about this very normal part of our life," said the Hollywood star, who picked up a best actress Oscar for 2001 romantic drama "Monster's Ball." The bill, Advancing Menopause Care and Mid-Life Women's Health Act, is sponsored by senators from both parties and would divert $275 million to research, raising awareness and...

Catholics typically baptise newborns with holy water. But according to one AI priest, Gatorade or other soft drinks will also do. The clerical chatbot, only the latest example of AI struggling to match the hype surrounding it, has now been defrocked from an online Catholic resource after it began giving confessions without permission. Also on dpa trends this week, we've reviewed Apple's latest version of its best-selling Beats headphones as well as Ryan Gosling as a very ignored stunt man in "The Fall Guy". Waking up scared for life because of a neurological problem is a situation nobody ever wishes to find themselves in. Marijeta Mojasevic certainly never thought she could suffer a stroke, and even if, definitely not at 17 years old. Mojasevic was ...

Scientists say a new form of mpox found amid an outbreak in Congo may spread more easily among people. The Democratic Republic of Congo has had more than 4,500 suspected cases of mpox and some 300 deaths since January. The country recently declared the outbreak a health emergency. An analysis of patients hospitalised between October and January in Kamituga, eastern Congo, suggests recent genetic mutations in mpox are the result of its continued transmission in humans. Dr Placide Mbala-Kingebeni, the lead researcher of the study, said "we’re in a new phase of mpox". Mbala-Kingebeni heads a lab ...

Here's a good problem to have: Let's say the barbecue you'd planned fell through and you've got a couple of crates of beer on your hands that now will take nearly forever to drink. How long will it keep? The short answer is: longer than you may think. Although beer, in contrast to wine or spirits, is one of the few alcoholic beverages requiring a best-before date on the bottle or can, you don't have to pour it down the drain as soon as it's expired, says Daniele Krehl, a nutrition expert for the consumer advice centre in Bavaria, Germany. "The best-before date is simply the brewer's guarantee ...

Washington (AFP) - US President Joe Biden's administration is set to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, an official said Tuesday -- a historic shift that would bring federal policy more in line with public opinion. The US attorney general sent a proposal to the White House on Tuesday to "reclassify marijuana," Justice Department spokesperson Xochitl Hinojosa said in a statement. It comes after Biden became the first president to initiate a federal review into the matter, in 2022. The issue is seen as a potential vote winner for Biden as he faces Republican Donald Trump in a tough e...

Washington (AFP) - Women should get screened for breast cancer every other year starting from the age of 40 to reduce their risk of dying from the disease, an influential US body recommended on Tuesday. The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), an independent panel of experts that receives federal funding, previously said that women in their 40s should make an individual decision about when to start mammograms based on their health history and reserved its mandatory recommendation for people turning 50. Its new guidance was based on a review of evidence and a modeling study published in ...

A spa in the United States was the first to be linked to HIV transmission from cosmetic injections, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a report last week. Three people were found to be contaminated from "an undetermined source at the spa" in New Mexico in 2018, resulting in a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system. While it cannot be cured, treatment can bring the virus to undetectable levels, making it a manageable condition. How did Germany run low on potentially life-saving HIV medication? The cluster at the s...
