  • No. 7 Michigan regroups, turns attention to Maryland after humbling first defeat

Throughout the early portion of the Big Ten slate, Michigan was the one beating up opponents and delivering decisive knockout blows. For the first time, the Wolverines were on the receiving end of one of those haymakers in Saturday’s humbling 18-point defeat at Minnesota, where they trailed by as much as 23 points. And now for the first time all season, No. 7 Michigan finds itself in an unfamiliar position — having to pick itself up off the mat as it heads into Tuesday night’s rematch against Maryland. “No championship boxer has never — and I know it's a double negative — not been knocked down...

  • Outdoor workouts in January? COVID-19 restrictions force gyms to get creative during New Year’s resolution season

As temperatures hovered above freezing in Chicago Wednesday morning, nine people gathered in front of infrared heaters at the loading dock at Edge Athlete Lounge, in the West Town area, for a full-body strength routine that finished just before sunrise. Others followed a livestreamed version from home. But Cary Black, 41, a longtime Edge member training for two 100-kilometer ultramarathons, said he prefers being with the group and getting face-to-face instruction — as long as it’s above 10 degrees. “I feel like I go a little harder,” he said. “I get a better start to the day.” New Year’s resol...

  • An Urban Hospital on the Brink Vs. the Officials Sworn to Save It

Illinois and Chicago officials are trying to figure out how to stop a private company from closing a money-losing urban hospital in a poor, underserved Chicago neighborhood. Trinity Health, a national Catholic tax-exempt chain, wants to close Mercy Hospital and Medical Center on Chicago’s Near South Side by May 31. Last month, in an unusual move, the Illinois Health Facilities & Services Review Board unanimously denied Trinity permission to close the 412-bed facility, which predominantly serves Black and other minority patients on Medicaid. The board members said they feared the closure would ...

  • ‘General Hospital’ alum John Reilly dead at 84

John Reilly, a daytime soap opera actor who spent 11 seasons on “General Hospital,” has died. He was 84. “The brightest light in the world has gone out,” his daughter, Caitlin, wrote on Instagram Sunday. “Imagine the best person in the world. Now imagine that person being your dad. I’m so grateful he was mine. I’m so grateful I got to love him. I’m so grateful I made it in time to hold him and say goodbye. I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do, but I know he’ll be with me. I love you forever Daddy.” Reilly, a Chicago native, began his career on shows including “As The World Turns,” “Gunsm...

  • Motormouth: Don't top off your gas tank

Q: My wife owns a 1999 Subaru Forrester. Recently, we smelled gas after her gas purchase, and, after some conversation, she decided it was best to stop when the nozzle automatically shuts off. No more topping off. The problem is that after her last gasoline purchase, when she drove away, she saw that her tank was only 3/4 full. Do you have any recommendation for being certain her tank gets a true fill-up while not suffering any bad results from topping off? M.S., St. Charles, Ill. A: Squeezing that last drop of gas into the tank is a bad idea. It is a throwback to when most people paid with ca...

  • Balancing Act: Are we doing New Year’s resolutions after a year as lousy as 2020? There’s one I think we need more than ever

What do we resolve after a year like 2020? On the one hand, surviving it was enough; New Year’s resolutions seem beside the point. An indulgence. On the other hand, a lot of us had a whole lot of time to reflect on the meaning and trajectory of our lives — clarity where busyness used to be. My resolutions this year are small: A combination of things I vow to do as soon as it’s safe (hug my parents; host more dinner parties) and habits picked up in 2020 that I hope to maintain (read more novels, which engage both your imagination and your empathy). But 2021 also feels like a year for some colle...

  • Motormouth: Faulty brake light?

Q: I have a 2002 Lexus ES300 with 185,000 miles on it. Some time ago, the ABS and brake light came on simultaneously. I took it to my local shop who diagnosed a faulty ABS sensor. They said that I did not really need to replace it since it would cost close to the value of the car and that, even with a faulty ABS system, it would revert to normal braking and I'd just need to be more careful about braking in inclement conditions. I have not noticed any problems with braking. I don't really want such an expense for an old car. Should I be concerned? S.M., Plymouth, Minn. A: The anti-lock brake sy...

  • Motormouth: Spark plug problem

Q: In a recent column you responded to R.W. from Minnetonka, Minn., that he should not need spark plug replacement of the platinum tipped plugs until the manufacturer recommended 60,000 miles. One thing that is often not considered is that over time, the dissimilar metals in the aluminum heads and the spark plug materials make removal of the plugs difficult and potentially costly. Manufacturers tell vehicle owners that items have a longer service life than they actually do. J. K., Deerfield, Ill. A: Although they are dissimilar metals, the steel spark plug shells seldom seize with the aluminum...

  • Northwestern clinches the Big Ten West despite not playing Saturday — but its opponent in the conference title game is up in the air

CHICAGO — Despite not playing Saturday, No. 14 Northwestern clinched the Big Ten West Division title for a berth in the conference championship game. This is the second time in three seasons the Wildcats (5-1) have won the division title; they lost to Ohio State, 45-24, in the 2018 Big Ten final. The 2020 title game is scheduled for Dec. 19 in Indianapolis. Northwestern qualified without competing because of Big Ten rules for how many games must be played to be eligible. Only three games needed to be played Saturday for the Wildcats to clinch and eliminate No. 16 Wisconsin from contention. The...
