Auto review: Electric or gas? Audi e-tron vs. Audi SQ5
Cadillac Lyriq. Ford Mustang Mach E. Polestar 2. New, premium electric cars are coming and they will inevitably be compared to Tesla, the baseline for battery-powered success. But to sell in volume, these challengers must also outperform the gas siblings across the showroom floor. Take the electric Audi e-tron Fastback and Audi SQ5 SUVs I just drove to Hell and back. Hell, Michigan, that is. My favorite southeast Michigan drive route, the 120-mile journey tests a vehicle's tech, handling and range. The gas-powered, $45,000 Audi Q5 is the brand's best-selling vehicle, and its SQ5 performance ve...

Motormouth: A solar battery charger
Q: Like a lot of people, I haven’t been driving much during the pandemic. I couldn’t start the car one day, had it jumped, and drove right to the dealership, where they replaced the battery. A clerk told me that four computers are operating at all times in the car, draining the battery, and that I needed to drive the car more to charge the battery. I don’t want to drive around just to charge my battery. He instead suggested I buy a battery charger, but I do not have an electrical outlet where I park my car. S.P., Chicago A: A solar battery charger might be the answer. You simply place it on th...

Commentary: Incite much? Rudy Giuliani has been down this riot road before
When he needed someone to help incite the terrorist mob that would occupy the venerable seat of American government Wednesday, President Donald Trump turned to a trusted destructive ally with experience in that sort of thing. Rudy Giuliani’s criminal fingerprints are all over this calamity just as they are on the coffee mug he uses when he’s washing down his morning bagel, or the cigar he holds when he’s blowing a more traditional kind of smoke. The president’s personal lawyer was Trump’s warmup act at a Washington, D.C., rally to protest baseless voting fraud claims as lawmakers were gatherin...

Suspended road tests give teens easier route to licenses
Teens across the country waiting anxiously to get their driver’s licenses were disappointed when most state motor vehicle departments suspended road testing for weeks — and sometimes for months — after the COVID-19 pandemic struck in March. While many states have since returned to road testing, several others have opted to waive that requirement and allow teens to get their license anyway, at least for a time. That’s only fair, state officials say. The teens typically have completed many hours of classroom instruction and supervised driving time. They need a license to get to jobs and help the...
No one knew secret behind Ford's Mustang Mach-E, Bronco Sport — until now
The Bronco Sport wasn't in the original plan at Ford. It started out as a boxy, bland, nondescript, unmemorable small SUV . Definitely not part of a legendary Bronco family. It was conceived to help meet fuel economy targets for the company. Now each SUV has a waiting list. Owners of the 2021 Bronco Sport report being treated like Hollywood royalty.
