Sam Neill, the actor who portrayed Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, announced seven months ago that he is being treated for stage-three blood cancer. The actor had been experiencing swollen glands while promoting Jurassic World Dominion before eventually being diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma. Neill recently revealed in an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Australian Story that he had been undergoing chemotherapy, which only worked for three months. The actor explained that he had been in remission for a year as a result of taking a rare anti-c...

Ask any person on the street if they are at least somewhat familiar with comic book legend Stan Lee, and almost always the answer will be a resounding yes. Lee has become such an icon in not just the world of superheroes, but in just popular culture as a whole. The man has helped create some of the most iconic characters in all of fiction, so naturally, considering the legacy that Lee has left on the world since his passing, it only makes sense for a documentary to be made about his life. However, while I’m sure that a great, honest and detailed documentary about Lee will exist at some point i...

First Time Female Director lead star, writer and director, Chelsea Peretti is a lot of things. A talented stand-up comedian who can consistently make audiences (including myself) laugh. An energetic character actor who can make even the mundane whacky as evidenced by her character, Gina Linetti, in the police procedural comedy, Brooklyn 99. A sharp and hilarious writer as seen in series like Parks and Recreation and Kroll Show. She is clearly talented in a lot of fields, but unfortunately, I don’t believe that directing is one of them. Despite First Time Female Director having more than a hand...

Due to the unfortunate relevancy of school shootings in American society, it’s no wonder that we’ve been seeing more and more films about this subject matter. However, while several films and TV series have primarily focused on students and how such atrocities have affected their lives, Michael Shannon’s directorial debut, Eric LaRue, which premiered last week at the Tribeca Film Festival, takes a very different path. Instead, the film tells the story of a grieving mother whose high school son committed a school shooting and murdered three students in the process. She and her husband use relig...

There have been many talented musicians who have given excellent performances in high-profile movies like Justin Timberlake in The Social Network and Inside Llewyn Davis and Lady Gaga in A Star is Born. There have been many children, nieces and nephews of famous directors who have proven to be as talented as their parents, aunts, and uncles like Sofia Coppola and Brandon Cronenberg. The Good Half‘s lead actor and director, Nick Jonas and Robert Schwartzman, the brother of actor Jason Schwartzman, are unfortunately in these neither of these groups – their film is one the most cliched, unfunny, ...

Out of all the films I saw at the Tribeca Film Festival, the screening of Tian Xiopeng’s Deep Sea was the only theater experience where I can say my emotional journey mirrored that of an amusement park roller coaster. The first half of this film was genuinely unbearable to sit through. Not only was it painfully obvious how much the film was ripping off the style and sensibilities of legendary animation director Hayao Miyazaki (specifically Spirited Away), but the actual execution of the first half in terms of presentation, animation and humor left me wincing at what I was watching. All the cha...

Admittedly, I did not care for Kevin Smith‘s 1997 romantic comedy-drama film, Chasing Amy, when I first saw it. While there are elements of the film that I believe are worthy of praise such as the performances, particularly from Joey Lauren Adams, and several smartly-written monologues, overall it is, in my opinion, a very dated, flawed film that does not hold up today. I did not get a lot out of Chasing Amy when I first saw it, and I have rarely, if ever, thought about it since seeing it. That being said, I completely understand why this film would mean a lot to someone else. I can see how so...

While the comparison is inevitable, it is certainly a bit unfair to compare Tim Story‘s The Blackening to Jordan Peele‘s Get Out. Both are horror comedies starring black characters and attempt to be both entertaining while also providing social commentary on black identity. While both films obviously have different goals and approaches, it makes sense as to why the two films are being compared. However, while the comparison may be a bit unfair, it is also not unjustifiable either because in terms of being both a horror film and a comedy, Get Out is the superior film that manages to be both mor...
