Chicago's Magnificent Mile is ‘not invincible.’ Flagship mall faces huge challenges
Almost a half-century after opening, Water Tower Place, the once-bustling retail mall at the north end of Chicago's Magnificent Mile, remains shiny marble on the outside, but inside it’s losing some of its sparkle. Macy’s, which anchors the south end of the building, announced plans last week to close in a few months, leaving behind a more than 300,000-square-foot hole. In June, restaurant group Lettuce Entertain You closed Foodlife, credited by some as Chicago’s first food hall, and Mity Nice Bar & Grill. Both had been there for 27 years. Another Water Tower retailer, Gap, which has been clos...

Falconry, an ancient form of hunting, finds new devotees
GRANTVILLE, Pa. — The red-tailed hawk sat perched on the twisted limb of an old, dead tree, its eyes locked on the woman traipsing through the briars and thickets below. Wherever Jade Chen went, Candy Corn, the hawk, followed. Sometimes Chen, 33, had to blow a small whistle around her neck to nudge him. "Come on, boy," she said. Chen wore a thick, leather glove called a gauntlet that extended up her arm, and when she raised it, Candy Corn swooped down through the forest in silence toward her. Little bells on his talons jingled when he landed on her hand. Then he was off again, looking for a tr...

WASHINGTON — The U.S. House and Senate have signed off on a measure that would upgrade the federal designation of various sites in Plains, Georgia, tied to former President Jimmy Carter. Now, it's up to President Donald Trump to decide if he will sign the bill into law. That would allow the farm where Carter grew up, the train depot that once headquartered his presidential campaign, his old high school and the city center to be upgraded from "historic sites" to a "national historic park." The Jimmy Carter National Historical Park would also one day include the home where the 96-year-old and hi...

Seattle police removing encampment at Cal Anderson Park; 21 arrested
SEATTLE — Seattle police and city park workers began clearing out Cal Anderson Park on Friday morning after a federal judge denied a request for an emergency temporary restraining order to halt the removal of a homeless encampment. The camp — a combination of protesters and homeless people and those who identify as both — has more or less existed in the park since this summer, when it sprung up connected to the “Capitol Hill Occupied Protest” zone on the adjoining street. But when the zone was taken down by police, the camp stayed, resisting a series of efforts to remove it. Each time police r...
