Another Cuomo aide alleges inappropriate behavior in new report
NEW YORK — A third staffer to Gov. Andrew Cuomo accused him of inappropriate behavior, saying in a newspaper interview that he asked her if she had a boyfriend, called her “sweetheart,” touched her back and kissed her hand. Ana Liss, 35, who worked for Cuomo between 2013 and 2015, told The Wall Street Journal that at first she saw the governor’s actions as harmless flirtations, but came over time to see it as patronizing and professionally diminishing. Liss said in the story published Saturday night that she felt she went from being an educated professional to “just a skirt.” “It’s not appropr...

Georgia Senate OKs bill to block governor from closing churches, businesses during emergency
ATLANTA — The Georgia Senate voted to approve one of several bills aimed at reining in the powers governors have during a public emergency. Senate Bill 200 would allow churches to continue to hold all services and activities during a declared state of emergency. Businesses also would be able to operate as long as they meet safety protocols as established by the governor. The measure passed 29-19. State Sen. Jason Anavitarte, a Republican and the bill’s sponsor, said a public emergency shouldn’t overrule Georgians’ ability to gather and worship — or continue to run their businesses. Senate Demo...

18-year-old Capitol rioter wants to go home to his ‘loving family’ who drove him to DC
A Georgia teen charged for alleged involvement in the U.S. Capitol riot now admits he “was wrong” for his actions and hopes to spend his pretrial days with his folks, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Friday. Bruno Cua, 18, is the youngest of more than 300 people accused of having stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 in support of former President Donald Trump and has been in custody since his Feb. 5 arrest. Hoping U.S. District Court Judge Randolph D. Moss might take pity on him, Cua vowed “not to step one foot out of line,” not least because he “will never be the same person” after a month ...

Fox News host Tucker Carlson defends QAnon supporters as ‘gentle people’ waving American flags
Tucker Carlson has defended QAnon supporters saying that they are “gentle people” who are “waving American flags.” Carlson’s comments came in the first minutes of his prime-time show on Fox News, “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” on Friday night. During his opening monologue, Carlson set out to explain to his viewers “just how dangerous” QAnon really is, as he reported that “all troops who took part in the mission to protect our democracy from internet conspiracy theorists” would now “receive medals in recognition of their heroic sacrifice,” he said mockingly. Carlson was, of course, referring to the ...

Georgia plays better, but comes up short again vs. Alabama
ATHENS, Ga. — Not ready for prime time. That’s not meant as a criticism, but it was the main takeaway from Georgia’s admirable but losing effort against No. 8 Alabama on Saturday at Stegeman Coliseum. The Bulldogs led by 14 points in the first half and were within a single possession with a minute to play. But it was the Crimson Tide who made all the important plays when they mattered — including a key 3-point shot with 46 seconds remaining — and the SEC regular-season champions pulled away at the end for an 89-79 victory. “Yeah, I’m not a moral victory kind of dude,” said Georgia point guard ...

Loyola Chicago rolls to 65-49 victory over Indiana State, into MVC Tournament final for 2nd time in 4 years
Loyola’s first two possessions Saturday provided an omen to Indiana State of what was to come in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament semifinal. After winning the opening tip, the top-seeded Ramblers (23-4) moved the ball in their half-court set and found guard Braden Norris for an open 3-pointer to kick off the scoring. The No. 4 seed Sycamores (15-10) responded with a bucket of their own, but when they double-teamed center Cameron Krutwig in the post, Krutwig found Keith Clemons for another shot from behind the arc. Loyola started 5 for 5 on 3-pointers, and with 11 minutes, 22 seconds r...

COVID-19 cases slowly ease statewide, but NYC still lags, Cuomo says
NEW YORK — Coronavirus infection rates and caseloads continue to drop slowly in New York state even as the numbers in the city stay too high for comfort, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Saturday. The number of New Yorkers hospitalized with the deadly virus dropped below 5,000 Friday to a level not seen in three months. And the positive test rate for COVID dipped to 2.8%, the lowest since before Thanksgiving. “We still have a lot of work to do to defeat this beast once and for all,” Cuomo said. Another 78 New Yorkers died Friday, including 43 in the five boroughs, numbers that has remained stubbornly hi...

California hits 10 million vaccine doses administered
SAN JOSE, Calif. — California has reached 10 million COVID-19 vaccine doses administered, a positive sign in a state that struggled with one of the slowest starts to its vaccination rollout in the nation, and an encouraging metric alongside declining case rates and hospitalizations from the deadly virus. Calling it a “major marker in the effort to get vaccines out of refrigerators and into people’s arms” in a video shared on Twitter, Gov. Gavin Newsom said California has administered more total vaccine doses than any other state in the nation and more than all but six countries in the world. T...

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's month from hell: Power outages, COVID-19 and Republican discontent
FORT WORTH, Texas — The night of March 1, Greg Abbott ratcheted up suspense with an announcement on Twitter. "I will have some exciting news for you tomorrow," he said, as if the last two weeks had not been eventful enough. The next day he'd announce the reopening of Texas and lift his statewide mask order. The news — met with praise from some and ire by others — came just weeks after an historic winter freeze pushed Texas' electric grid to the limits, leaving 4 million-plus households without power. Nearly half the state endured boil orders and low water pressure. (Many Texans took to flushin...
